THE INTERNAL SENSE

560. 계속해서 진도를 나가기 전에 먼저, 홍수 이전 교회의 상황은 어땠는지를 좀 말씀드리는 게 좋을 것 같습니다. Before proceeding further we may mention how the case was with the church before the flood.

일반적으로는, 후에 일어난 교회들의 상황들과 같았다 말씀드릴 수 있겠습니다. 즉, 주님 강림 전 유대교회의 경우나, 주님 강림 후 기독교회의 경우처럼, 참 신앙 지식의 부패와 타락, 뒤집힘 및 불순물을 섞음 등이 되어갔던 것입니다. 그러나 자세히는, 홍수 전 교회에 속한 사람의 경우, 그는 시간이 흐르면서 무서운 신념, 곧 소름 끼치는 망상을 품게 되었고, 신앙에 속한 선과 진리를 역겨운 갈망, 욕망에 철저히 잠기게 하여 그 결과, 그들 안에 리메인스가 거의 남아 있지 않을 지경까지 가도록 만들었습니다. Speaking generally, it was as with succeeding churches, as with the Jewish church before the Lord’s advent, and the Christian church after his advent, in that it had corrupted and adulterated the knowledges of true faith; but specifically, as regards the man of the church before the flood, he in course of time conceived direful persuasions, and immersed the goods and truths of faith in foul yearnings, insomuch that there were scarcely any remains in them.

When they came into this state they were suffocated as if of themselves, for man cannot live without remains; for, as we have said, it is in the remains that the life of man is superior to that of brutes.

리메인스를 가지고, 즉, 주님에게서 온 리메인스를 통해서, 사람은 사람이 될 수도, 무엇이 선이요, 진리인지를 알 수도, 온갖 종류의 일들을 생각할 수도, 그리고 결과적으로 이성적으로 사고할 수도 있는 것입니다. 리메인스 그 안에는 영적, 천적 생명이 있기 때문입니다. From remains, that is, through remains from the Lord, man is able to be as man, to know what is good and true, to reflect upon matters of every kind, and consequently to think and to reason; for in remains alone is there spiritual and celestial life.

561. 그러면 리메인스라는 것은 도대체 무엇입니까? But what are remains?

리메인스는 사람이 유년기부터 주님의 말씀을 통해 배워 그의 기억에 강한 인상을 심어준 선과 진리뿐 아니라, 거기서 기원한 모든 상태, 가령, 영유아기 순진무구한 상태, 부모, 형제, 선생님과 친구를 향한 사랑의 상태, 이웃을 향한 체어리티 및 가난한 자, 빈궁한 자를 불쌍히 여기는 상태 등, 한 마디로, 선과 진리에 속한 모든 상태 또한 가리킵니다. They are not only the goods and truths that a man has learned from the Lord’s Word from infancy, and has thus impressed on his memory, but they are also all the states thence derived, such as states of innocence from infancy; states of love toward parents, brothers, teachers, friends; states of charity toward the neighbor, and also of pity for the poor and needy; in a word, all states of good and truth.

선과 진리와 함께 기억에 각인된 이런 상태를 일컬어 리메인스라 합니다. 이것은 주님에 의해 사람 안에 보관되는데, 이때 주님은 사람으로 하여금 조금도 눈치 못 채게 조심조심 그의 속사람 안에 쌓아가십니다. 이것은 사람에게나 어울리는, 즉, 악과 거짓에 관련된 것들하고는 철저히 격리됩니다. These states together with the goods and truths impressed on the memory, are called remains, which are preserved in man by the Lord and are stored up, entirely without his knowledge, in his internal man, and are completely separated from the things that are proper to man, that is, from evils and falsities.

이 모든 상태는 그 가운데 아주 작은 것조차 잃는 것이 없도록 주님에 의해 사람 안에 보존됩니다. 저는 다음과 같은 사실을 알도록 전에 이런 경험을 했는데요, 사람의 모든 상태는 그의 영유아 때부터 아주 늙었을 때까지 내세에 그대로 보존될 뿐만 아니라 다시 체험되기도 한다는 것을 말입니다. 실제로 사람의 상태는 그가 현세에 살면서 처음 겪었던 상태 그대로 정확히 다시 체험됩니다. All these states are so preserved in man by the Lord that not the least of them is lost, as I have been given to know from the fact that every state of a man, from his infancy to extreme old age, not only remains in the other life, but also returns; in fact his states return exactly as they were while he lived in this world.

우리 기억에 아로새겨진 선과 진리뿐 아니라, 우리가 경험한 모든 이노센스나 체어리티도 마찬가지, 즉, 하나도 잃는 것은 없습니다. Not only do the goods and truths of memory thus remain and return, but also all states of innocence and charity.

그리고 악과 거짓의 상태가 재발될 때, 곧, 이들 악과 거짓이 개별적이든 전체적이든, 심지어 아주 작은 것조차 역시 고스란히 남아 있고, 다시 체험되는데요, 이때는 주님에 의해 선한 상태로 누그러뜨려집니다. And when states of evil and falsity recur—for each and all of these, even the smallest, also remain and return—then these states are tempered by the Lord by means of the good states.

이 모든 사실로 확실히 알 수 있는 것은, 사람에게 리메인스가 전혀 남아 있지 않게 되면, 그는 반드시 영원한 지옥살이, 곧, 영원히 지옥에 있게 될 것이라는 사실입니다. (전에 말씀드린 AC.468번 글을 보시기 바랍니다.) From all this it is evident that if a man had no remains he must necessarily be in eternal damnation. (See what was said before at n. 468.)

562. 홍수 전 사람들은 결국 리메인스를 거의 갖고 있지 못하게 된 그런 사람들이었습니다. 그 이유는, 그들이 가진 독특한 멘탈 때문인데요, 그들은 자신들에게 일어나는 모든 일과 떠오르는 모든 생각에 관해, 무서울 정도로 끔찍하고 혐오스러운 종교적 신념으로 가득 채우는 사람들이었습니다. 그들은 자신들의 이런 멘탈적 특성에서 한 발짝도 물러서고자 하지 않았는데, 그것은 이들은 어마어마한 자아 사랑의 사람들이었고, 자신들을 신으로 여기며, 자기들이 하는 생각은 무엇이든지 신성한 것으로 여기는 사람들이었기 때문입니다. The people before the flood were such that at last they had almost no remains, because they were of such a genius that they became imbued with direful and abominable persuasions concerning all things that occurred to them or came into their thought, so that they would not go back from them one whit, for they were possessed with the most enormous love of self, and supposed themselves to be as gods, and that whatever they thought was Divine.

이런 종교적 신념, 종교적 설득력, 이쯤 되면 종교적 수준의 자기기만인데요, 이런 것은 이전에도, 이후에도 어떤 사람들한테서도 존재한 적이 없었습니다. 이것은 사람들을 숨 막히게 하고 질식시켜 죽게 만들기 때문입니다. 이런 이유로, 내세에서는 이 홍수 전 시대 사람들은 다른 영들과 함께 있을 수가 없는데요, 그들이 나타나면 그들은 공포스럽다 판명된 자신들의 이 종교적 신념을 주입함으로써 사람들의 모든 사고능력을 거두어 가기 때문입니다. 여기서는 이쯤 하고, 나머지는 주님의 신적 자비, 곧 허락하심으로 이어지는 그 부분에서 계속하겠습니다. (AC.1265-1272) No such persuasion has ever existed in any people before or since, for it is deadly or suffocative, and therefore in the other life the antediluvians cannot be with any other spirits, for when they are present they take away from them all power of thought by injecting their fearfully determined persuasions, not to mention other matters which of the Lord’s Divine mercy shall be spoken of in what follows.

When such a persuasion takes possession of a man, it is like a glue which catches in its sticky embrace the goods and truths that otherwise would be remains, the result of which is that remains can no longer be stored up, and those which have been stored up can be of no use; and therefore when these people arrived at the summit of such persuasion they became extinct of their own accord, and were suffocated by an inundation not unlike a flood; and therefore their extinction is compared to a “flood,” and also, according to the custom of the most ancient people, is described as one.

1사람이 땅 위에 번성하기 시작할 때에 그들에게서 딸들이 나니 And it came to pass that man began to multiply himself upon the faces of the ground, and daughters were born unto them. 2하나님의 아들들이 사람의 딸들의 아름다움을 보고 자기들이 좋아하는 모든 여자를 아내로 삼는지라 And the sons of God saw the daughters of man that they were good; and they took to themselves wives of all that they chose. 3여호와께서 이르시되 나의 영이 영원히 사람과 함께 하지 아니하리니 이는 그들이 육신이 됨이라 그러나 그들의 날은 백이십 년이 되리라 하시니라 And Jehovah said, My spirit shall not reprove man forever, for that he is flesh; and his days shall be a hundred and twenty years. 4당시에 땅에는 네피림이 있었고 그 후에도 하나님의 아들들이 사람의 딸들에게로 들어와 자식을 낳았으니 그들은 용사라 고대에 명성이 있는 사람들이었더라 There were Nephilim in the earth in those days; and most especially after the sons of God went in unto the daughters of man, and they bare to them; the same became mighty men, who were of old, men of renown. 5여호와께서 사람의 죄악이 세상에 가득함과 그의 마음으로 생각하는 모든 계획이 항상 악할 뿐임을 보시고 And Jehovah saw that the evil of man was multiplied on the earth, and that all the imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil every day. 6땅 위에 사람 지으셨음을 한탄하사 마음에 근심하시고 And it repented Jehovah that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. 7이르시되 내가 창조한 사람을 내가 지면에서 쓸어버리되 사람으로부터 가축과 기는 것과 공중의 새까지 그리하리니 이는 내가 그것들을 지었음을 한탄함이니라 하시니라 And Jehovah said, I will destroy man whom I have created, from upon the faces of the ground, both man and beast, and creeping thing, and fowl of the heavens; for it repenteth me that I have made him. 8그러나 노아는 여호와께 은혜를 입었더라 And Noah found grace in the eyes of Jehovah.

THE CONTENTS

554. 여기서 다루는 주제는 홍수 전 사람들의 상태입니다. The subject here treated of is the state of the people before the flood.

555. 사람과 더불어 교회가 있었던 곳에 갈망(yearnings, 욕구, 욕망, appetites)이 일어나 사람과 교회를 다스리기 시작했습니다. 이 갈망이 바로 ‘딸들’입니다. That with man, where the church was, yearnings—which are the “daughters”—began to reign.

그들은 또한 신앙의 가르침들과 자신들의 갈망을 단단히 묶어, 그 결과, 자기들이 악과 거짓 가운데 있음을 확실히 했습니다. 이것을 ‘하나님의 아들들이 사람의 딸들의 아름다움을 보고 자기들이 좋아하는 모든 여자를 아내로 삼는지라’라는 표현으로 말씀하신 것입니다. (1-2절) Also that they conjoined the doctrinal things of faith with their yearnings, and thus confirmed themselves in evils and falsities, which is signified by “the sons of God taking to themselves wives of the daughters of man” (verses 1–2).

556. 그 결과, 선과 진리의 리메인스가 하나도 남지 않게 되었고, 이런 상황에서 주님은 그럼에도 불구하고 사람들로 하여금 리메인스를 습득하여 계속해서 지니고 있게 하시려고 사람들을 새롭게 만드시려는 마음을 먹으셨습니다. ‘백이십 년’은 리메인스를 가리킵니다. (3절) And whereas there were thus no remains of good and truth left, it is foretold that man should be differently formed, in order that he might have remains, which are “a hundred and twenty years” (verse 3).

557. 신앙의 가르침들을 자기들이 가진 욕망 실현의 도구로 이용하고, 이런 상태로 자기를 사랑하고, 자아를 사랑하면서, 남들과 비교, 자기들만이 가진 위대함이 얼마나 뛰어난지, 자기들이 얼마나 중요한 사람들인지 하는, 끔찍할 정도로 소름 돋는 망상, 즉 종교적 신념에 사로잡힌 사람들, 이런 자들이 바로 ‘네피림’입니다. (4절) Those who immersed the doctrinal things of faith in their yearnings, and in consequence of this as well as of the love of self conceived dreadful persuasions of their own greatness in comparison with others, are signified by the “Nephilim” (verse 4).

558. 이렇게 되고 나자 선과 진리에 관한 무슨 의지나 퍼셉션은 더 이상 세상에 존재하지 않게 되었습니다. (5절) In consequence of this there no longer remained any will or perception of good and truth (verse 5).

559. ‘한탄하사 마음에 근심하시고’는 주님의 자비(mercy)에 대한 묘사입니다. (6절) The mercy of the Lord is described by “repenting and grieving at heart” (verse 6).

그들은 이런 갈망과 이런 신념은 사람을 반드시 죽음에 이르게 하고 만다는 것을 입증한 그런 사람들이었습니다. (7절) That they became such that their yearnings and persuasions must needs prove fatal to them (verse 7).

이런 상황에서, 인류가 건짐을, 구원을 받을 수 있으려면 새로운 교회가 반드시 일어나야 했는데, 그 교회가 바로 ‘노아’입니다. (8절) Therefore in order that the human race might be saved, a new church should arise, which is “Noah” (verse 8).

CONCERNING HEAVEN AND HEAVENLY JOY

553. 천국에서 서로 사랑 가운데 있는 그들은 그들 젊음의 봄날을 향해 끊임없이 나아갑니다. 그들은 수천 년을 더 살면 살수록 더욱 더 기쁘고 행복한 봄을 향해 나아갑니다. 이것은 서로 사랑, 체어리티, 그리고 신앙의 진보와 정도에 따라 영원히 계속해서 증가합니다. They who are in mutual love in heaven are continually advancing to the springtime of their youth, and to a more and more gladsome and happy spring the more thousands of years they live, and this with continual increase to eternity, according to the advance and degree of mutual love, charity, and faith.

나이 들고 오랜 세월 쇠약해져 죽은, 주님 신앙, 이웃 사랑, 그리고 남편과 행복한 결혼애 안에서 살아온 여성들은 시간이 흐르면서 점점 더 꽃 같은 젊음과 꽃다운 시절, 그리고 육안으로는 결코 지각할 수 없는, 미(美)에 대한 모든 관념을 다 초월해 버리는 아름다움 속으로 들어갑니다. 그들의 본 모습(likeness)을 꾸미고 표현하며, 체어리티의 즐거움과 아름다움으로 하여금 얼굴의 모든 아주 미세한 데서부터 뿜어져 나오게 하는 것은 바로 그들의 선과 체어리티이기 때문입니다. 그들은 체어리티의 모습들(forms) 그 자체입니다. 더러는 그들을 보고 무척 놀라워했습니다. Those of the female sex who have died in old age and enfeebled with years, and who have lived in faith in the Lord, in charity toward the neighbor, and in happy conjugial love with their husbands, after a succession of years come more and more into the bloom of youth and early womanhood, and into a beauty that surpasses all idea of beauty such as is ever perceptible to the natural sight; for it is goodness and charity forming and presenting their own likeness, and causing the delight and beauty of charity to shine forth from every least feature of the countenance, so that they are the very forms of charity: some have beheld them and been amazed.

체어리티의 모습은, 이런 관념적인 것들이 저 세상 삶에서는 표상과 외관으로 보이기 때문에, 초상화처럼 그림으로 그리거나 그려진 체어리티 자체입니다. 이것은 전체적인 천사, 특히 천사의 얼굴이 천사의 내면을 온전히 표현하는 것과 같은 방식인데요, 이렇게 초상화 그림처럼 보이는 체어리티는 보기에도 분명히 체어리티요, 마음으로 지각하기에도 분명히 체어리티인 그런 생생한 체어리티입니다. The form of charity, as is seen to the life in the other world, is such that it is charity itself that portrays and is portrayed, and this in such a manner that the whole angel, and especially the face, is as it were charity, the charity both plainly appearing to the view and being perceived by the mind.

이 모습을 눈으로 보게 되면, 그 말로 도저히 표현할 수 없는 아름다움 때문에, 보는 사람의 마음 저 안쪽 가장 깊은 생명은 감동으로 가득 찹니다. When this form is beheld, it is unutterable beauty that affects with charity the very inmost life of the beholder’s mind.

이런 아름다운 모습을 통해서 신앙의 진리들이, 하나의 이미지로 볼 수 있도록 제공되며, 심지어 그 이미지로부터 지각까지 됩니다. Through the beauty of this form the truths of faith are presented to view in an image, and are even perceived from it.

주님 신앙, 곧 체어리티 신앙으로 살아온 사람들은 저 세상에서는 이런 모습들, 즉, 아름다움들이 됩니다. Such forms, or such beauties, do those become in the other life who have lived in faith in the Lord, that is, in the faith of charity.

모든 천사들은 헤아릴 수 없는 다양함과 함께 모두 이런 모습들이며, 이런 곳이 바로 천국입니다. All the angels are such forms, with countless variety, and of such is heaven.
