천국은 두 나라로 나누어져 있다

Heaven Is Divided into Two Kingdoms

20. 천국에는 무한한 다양성이 있기 때문에, 그리고 어느 한 소사이어티(society, 공동체), 어느 한 천사도 서로 정확히 똑같지 않기 때문에 (주27), 천국은 일반적, 종류별, 그리고 세부적 구분들이 있습니다. As there are infinite varieties in heaven, and no one society nor any one angel is exactly like any other, (주27) there are in heaven general, specific, and particular divisions.

※ 위 종류별, 세부적에 대한 표현은 각각 specific, particular로, 뜻이 살짝 다르지만, 실제 내용에 대한 우리말 표현은 이 번역이 더 어울려 김은경 역을 그대로 사용합니다.

일반적으로는 두 나라(kingdom, 왕국)로, 종류별로는 세 천국, 그리고 세부적으로는 무수히 많은 소사이어티들로 구분됩니다. The general division is into two kingdoms, the specific into three heavens, and the particular into innumerable societies.

※ 소사이어티(society)에 대한 현대적 번역은 ‘공동체’이지만 원전에 충실하기 위해, 그리고 그 뉘앙스가 살짝 달라, 체어러티(charity, 이웃 사랑, 인애, 자선, 기부 등)처럼 영어에 대한 한글 표기 그대로 사용하겠습니다. 이렇게 영어를 한글로 표기하는 것이 종종 있는데요, 어펙션(affection, 애정, 애착, 정서, 정동 등) 역시 그렇습니다. 그 이유는, 영어에 대한 한국어 뜻이 여러 개여서 어느 하나로 정할 경우, 다른 나머지 뉘앙스들을 다 잃기 때문입니다.

이들 각각에 대해서는 이어지는 내용에서 다루게 됩니다. Each of these will be treated of in what follows.

일반적으로는 나라로 구분하는데, 천국을 ‘하나님의 나라’라 하기 때문입니다. The general division is said to be into kingdoms, because heaven is called “the kingdom of God.”

21. 주님에게서 나오는 신성(神性, the Divine)을 내적으로 더 받는 천사들이 있고, 덜 받는 천사들이 있습니다. 전자를 천적 천사들이라, 후자를 영적 천사들이라 합니다. There are angels that receive more interiorly the Divine that goes forth from the Lord, and others that receive it less interiorly; the former are called celestial angels, and the latter spiritual angels.

이런 차이로, 천국을 두 나라로 나누어져 있다 하며, 하나를 천적 나라, 다른 쪽을 영적 나라라 합니다.(주28 ) Because of this difference heaven is divided into two kingdoms, one called the celestial kingdom, the other the spiritual kingdom.(주28)

22. 천적 나라를 구성하는 천사들은 주님의 신성을 더 내적으로 받기 때문에, 그들을 가리켜 더 내적인 천사, 더 높은 천사라 합니다. 같은 이유로, 그들로 구성되는 천국을 더 내적 천국, 더 높은 천국이라 합니다.(주29) As the angels that constitute the celestial kingdom receive the Divine of the Lord more interiorly they are called interior and also higher angels; and for the same reason the heavens that they constitute are called interior and higher heavens.(주29)

그들을 일컬어 더 높다, 더 낮다 하는 이유는, 이런 표현들을 써서 내적인 것, 외적인 것을 지정하기 때문입니다.(주30) They are called higher and lower, because these terms designate what is interior and what is exterior.(주30)

23. 천적 나라에 있는 사람들의 사랑을 천적 사랑, 영적 나라에 있는 사람들의 사랑을 영적 사랑이라 합니다. The love in which those are who are in the celestial kingdom is called celestial love, and the love in which those are who are in the spiritual kingdom is called spiritual love.

천적 사랑은 주님을 향한 사랑이며, 영적 사랑은 이웃을 향한 사랑입니다. Celestial love is love to the Lord, and spiritual love is love toward the neighbor.

모든 선은 사랑과 어울리기 때문에 (어떤 사람에게 선이란 그가 사랑하는 것이므로), 또한 한 나라의 선을 가리켜 천적 선이라, 다른 나라의 선은 영적 선이라고 합니다. And as all good pertains to love (for good to anyone is what he loves) the good also of the one kingdom is called celestial, and the good of the other spiritual.

그래서 두 나라는 주님 사랑의 선이 이웃 사랑의 선과 구별되듯 그렇게 서로 확실히 구별됩니다.(주31) Evidently, then, the two kingdoms are distinguished from each other in the same way as good of love to the Lord is distinguished from good of love toward the neighbor.(주31)

그리고 주님 사랑의 선은 내적 선이요, 그 사랑은 내적 사랑이기 때문에, 천적 천사들은 내적 천사들이며, 천적 천사들을 가리켜 더 높은 천사들이라고 합니다. And as the good of love to the Lord is an interior good, and that love is interior love, so the celestial angels are interior angels, and are called higher angels.

24. 천적 나라를 또한 주님의 성직(聖職, priestly)의 나라라 하며, 말씀에서는 ‘그의 처소’라 합니다. 한편, 영적 나라는 주님의 왕권(王權, royal)의 나라라 하며, 말씀에서는 ‘그의 보좌’라 합니다. The celestial kingdom is called also the Lord’s priestly kingdom, and in the Word “his dwelling place”; while the spiritual kingdom is called his royal kingdom, and in the Word “his throne.”

이 세상에 계실 때의 주님을 신성의 천적 측면에서 ‘예수’라, 영적 측면에서 ‘그리스도’라 하였습니다. And from the celestial Divine the Lord in the world was called “Jesus,” while from the spiritual Divine he was called “Christ.”

25. 주님의 천적 나라 천사들은 주님의 신성을 보다 더 내적으로 받기 때문에, 주님의 영적 나라 천사들보다 지혜와 영광에 있어 훨씬 더 뛰어납니다. 그들은 주님 사랑 안에 있으며, 그 결과 주님과 더 가깝고, 주님과 더 친밀하게 결합하기 때문입니다.(주32) The angels in the Lord’s celestial kingdom, from their more interior reception of the Divine of the Lord, far excel in wisdom and glory the angels that are in his spiritual kingdom; for they are in love to the Lord, and consequently are nearer and more closely conjoined to him.(주32)

이들은 신적 진리를 그들의 생명(또는 생활, 삶, life) 안으로 즉시 받아들이고, 또 지속적으로 받아들이기 때문에 그런 것입니다. 영적 천사들처럼 먼저 기억과 사고 안으로 받아들이는 게 아니고 말입니다. These angels are such because they have received and continue to receive Divine truths at once in their life, and not first in memory and thought, as the spiritual angels do.

결과적으로, 천적 천사들은 신적 진리가 자기들 마음에 기록되어 있어 지각, 직관하며, 그것을 마치 자기들 안에 있는 것처럼 봅니다. 그들은 신적 진리를 그것이 참인지 아닌지 추론하지도 않습니다.(주33) 아래 예레미야의 말씀은 이들에 대한 말씀입니다. Consequently they have Divine truths written in their hearts, and they perceive them, and as it were see them in themselves; nor do they ever reason about them whether they are true or not.(주33) described in Jeremiah:

33내가 나의 법을 그들의 속에 두며 그들의 마음에 기록하여 34그들이 다시는 각기 이웃과 형제를 가리켜 이르기를 너는 여호와를 알라 하지 아니하리니 이는 작은 자로부터 큰 자까지 다 나를 알기 때문이라 They are such as are I will put my law in their mind, and will write it in their heart. They shall teach no more everyone his friend and everyone his brother, saying, Know ye Jehovah. They shall know Me, from the least of them even to the greatest of them. (렘31:33, 34)

그리고 이사야에서는 이들을 가리켜 And they are called in Isaiah:

여호와의 교훈을 받을 것이니 Taught of Jehovah. (사54:13)

라 하였는데, 여기 ‘여호와의 교훈을 받는 것’은 주님이 직접 가르치시는 것인데, 요한복음 6장 45절, 46절 말씀이 바로 이것입니다. That the “taught of Jehovah” are those who are taught by the Lord he himself teaches in John 6:45, 46.

45선지자의 글에 그들이 다 하나님의 가르치심을 받으리라 기록되었은즉 아버지께 듣고 배운 사람마다 내게로 오느니라 46이는 아버지를 본 자가 있다는 것이 아니니라 오직 하나님에게서 온 자만 아버지를 보았느니라 (요6:45-46)

26. 이들 천적 천사들이 다른 천사들보다 지혜와 영광이 더 뛰어난 이유는, 이들이 신적 진리를 자신들의 생명 안으로 즉시 받아들이며, 그걸 지속하기 때문이라고 앞서 말씀드렸습니다. It has been said that these angels have wisdom and glory above others for the reason that they have received and continue to receive Divine truths at once in their life.

이들은 신적 진리를 들으면 바로 그것을 의도하고 행하기 때문입니다. 일단 머릿속에 기억하였다가 나중에 그것이 참인지 아닌지를 생각하는 게 아니고 말입니다. For as soon as they hear Divine truths, they will and do them, instead of storing them up in the memory and afterwards considering whether they are true.

이들은 자기들이 들은 것이 진리임을 주님의 인플럭스(influx, 入流)로 즉시 알아차립니다. 주님은 사람의 의지 안으로는 직접 들어오시는 반면, 생각 안으로는 의지를 거쳐 간접적으로 들어오시기 때문입니다. They know at once by influx from the Lord whether the truth they hear is true; for the Lord flows directly into man’s willing, but mediately through his willing into his thinking.

혹은 같은 말이지만, 주님은 선 안으로는 직접 들어오시지만, 진리 안으로는 선을 거쳐 간접적으로 들어오십니다.(주34) Or what is the same, the Lord flows directly into good, but mediately through good into truth.(주34)

의지와 그로 말미암은 행동에 속한 것을 선이라 하는 반면, 기억과 그로 말미암은 생각에 속한 것을 진리라 합니다. That is called good which belongs to the will and action therefrom, while that is called truth that belongs to the memory and to the thought therefrom.

게다가 모든 진리는 의지 안으로 들어가자마자 선이 되며, 사랑 안에 심기지만, 그저 기억만 하고, 생각만 하고 있으면, 그런 진리는 선이 되지도 못하고, 선으로 하여금 살아있게도 못하며, 사람에게 어울리는 진리도 되지 못합니다. 사람은 의지(will, 의도, intent)와 그 의지에서 나오는 언더스탠딩(understanding, 이해, cognitive ability, 인식 능력)으로 사람인 것이지, 의지와 분리된 언더스탠딩만으로는 사람이 되지 못하기 때문입니다.(주35) Moreover, every truth is turned into good and implanted in love as soon as it enters into the will; but so long as truth remains in the memory and in the thought therefrom it does not become good, nor does it live, nor is it appropriated to man, since man is a man from his will and understanding therefrom, and not from his understanding separated from his will.(주35)

27. 천적 천사들과 영적 천사들 간의 이런 차이 때문에, 그들은 함께 있지도, 서로 아무 사귐도 없습니다. Because of this difference between the angels of the celestial kingdom and the angels of the spiritual kingdom they are not together, and have no association with each other.

그들은 천적-영적이라 하는, 중간 천사 소사이어티들에 의해서만 커뮤니케이션을 합니다. They are able to communicate only through intermediate angelic societies, which are called celestial-spiritual.

이들을 통해 천적 나라가 영적 나라 안으로 흐릅니다.(주36) 그리고 이런 식으로, 천국은 비록 두 나라로 나뉘어 있어도 하나가 되는 것입니다. Through these the celestial kingdom flows into the spiritual;(주36) and from this it comes to pass that although heaven is divided into two kingdoms it nevertheless makes one.

주님은 늘 이런 중간 천사들을 있게 하셔서 둘 사이 커뮤니케이션과 결합을 제공하십니다. The Lord always provides such intermediate angels through whom there is communication and conjunction.

28. 이들 두 나라의 천사들에 관해서는 앞으로 여기서 생략한 세부적인 내용들을 충분히 다룰 예정입니다. As the angels of these two kingdoms will be fully treated of in what follows, particulars are here omitted.

29. 천적 나라를 형성하는 천국들을 일컬어는 더 높다 하고, 영적 나라를 형성하는 천국들을 일컬어는 더 낮다 합니다. The heavens that constitute the celestial kingdom are called higher while those that constitute the spiritual kingdom are called lower. (n. 10068)

30. 내적인 것들은 더 높은 것들에 담기며, 더 높은 것들은 내적인 것들을 상징합니다. Interior things are portrayed by higher things, and higher things signify interior things. (n. 2148, 3084, 4599, 5146, 8325)

31. 천적 나라의 선은 주님을 향한 사랑의 선이고, 영적 나라의 선은 이웃을 향한 체어리티의 선입니다. The good of the celestial kingdom is good of love to the Lord, and the good of the spiritual kingdom is good of charity toward the neighbor. (n. 3691, 6435, 9468, 9680, 9683, 9780)

The will of man is the very being [esse] of his life, and the receptacle of the good of love, while his understanding is the outgo [existere] of his life therefrom, and the receptacle of the truth and good of faith. (n. 3619, 5002, 9282) 그래서 의지의 생명은 사람의 주된 생명이며, 인식 능력의 생명은 거기서 나오는 것입니다. Thus the will’s life is the chief life of man, and the life of the understanding goes forth therefrom. 36. 두 나라 간, 커뮤니케이션과 결합은 천적-영적이라 하는 천사적 소사이어티들에 의해서 일어납니다. Between the two kingdoms there is communication and conjunction by means of angelic societies which are called celestial-spiritual. 천국과 천국의 기쁨에 관하여

CONTINUATION CONCERNING HEAVENAND HEAVENLY JOY

545. 저로 하여금 천국과 천국 기쁨의 본질과 퀄러티에 대해 알게 하시려고 주님은 오랫동안 종종 제가 천국 기쁨의 즐거움을 지각할 수 있도록 허락하셨습니다. 그래서 저는 그것이 어떤 것인지를 이런 실제 경험을 통해 알게 되었지만 그러나 그것을 말로, 글로 설명하는 것은 불가능합니다. But in order that I might know the nature and quality of heaven and of heavenly joy, for long and often I have been permitted by the Lord to perceive the delights of heavenly joys, so that as I know them from actual experience I can indeed know them, but can by no means describe them.

하지만 제가 다음과 같이라도 말씀드리면 혹시 그것이 어떤 것인지를 살짝 가늠하실 수 있지 않을까 합니다. 천국의 기쁨은 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 즐거움과 기쁨을 수반하는 일종의 어펙션입니다. 이 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 즐거움과 기쁨이 전면적으로 동시에 경험되는 하나의 기쁨인데요, 이 전면적인 기쁨, 즉, 전면적인 어펙션 안에는 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 어펙션들이 조화를 이루며 존재합니다. 이때 이것은 하나하나 뚜렷이 지각되는 게 아니고, 모호하게 지각됩니다. 퍼셉션이 매우 전면적이기 때문입니다. However, in order to give some idea of it I may say that heavenly joy is an affection of innumerable delights and joys that form one general simultaneous joy, in which general joy, that is, in which general affection, there are harmonies of innumerable affections that do not come distinctly to perception, but obscurely, because the perception is very general.

그럼에도 불구하고 저는 허락하심을 받아 그 안, 천국의 기쁨 안에는 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 것들이 내재하고 있음을 지각할 수 있었습니다. 그것들은 말로는 도저히 어떻게 설명할 수 없는 질서로 내재해 있었는데, 바로 천국의 질서로부터 흐르는 질서였습니다. Yet I was permitted to perceive that there are things innumerable within it, in such order as can never be described, these innumerable things being such as flow from the order of heaven.

이런 질서는 그 어펙션 모든 가장 미세한 것에까지 존재하며, 함께 합쳐 그 전체가 하나로 보이고, 그것의 주제, 곧 그 어펙션을 느끼고 있는 그 사람의 역량에 따라 아주 전체적인 것으로 지각됩니다. Such order exists in every least thing of the affection, all of which together are presented and perceived as a very general one according to the capacity of him who is the subject of it.

한 마디로, 모든 전반적인 기쁨 혹은 어펙션에는 가장 온전한 형태로 조성된, 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 것들이 존재하지만, 살아있지 않거나 우리 안 가장 내적인 것에까지 영향을 미치지 않는 것은 전혀 없습니다. 천국의 기쁨은 가장 내적인 것들에서 비롯되기 때문입니다. In a word, in every general joy or affection there are illimitable things ordinated in a most perfect form, and there is nothing that is not alive or that does not affect even the inmost things of our being, for heavenly joys proceed from inmost things.

저는 또 지각하기를, 그 기쁨과 상쾌함은 마치 심장에서 나와 모든 가장 미세한 섬유조직들을 통해, 그리고 그렇게 조직 다발 속으로, 즐거움의 가장 내적 감각을 가지고 자신들을 아주 부드럽게 퍼트리는 것 같았으며, 이것은 마치 기쁨과 상쾌함만 남은 섬유조직 같았고, 이런 가운데서 나온 퍼셉션과 감각의 영향권 역시 전체적으로 그 행복하게 살아있는 것이 같았습니다. I perceived also that the joy and deliciousness came as if from the heart, and very softly diffused themselves through all the inmost fibers, and so into the congregated fibers, with such an inmost sense of delight that the fiber is as it were nothing but joy and deliciousness, and the whole derivative perceptive and sensitive sphere the same, being alive with happiness.

이들 기쁨들을 육체적 쾌락이 주는 기쁨과 비교하자면, 전자는 맑고 부드러운 산들바람 같다면, 후자는 역겹고 퀘퀘한 먼지와도 같다 할 수 있습니다. In comparison with these joys the joy of bodily pleasures is like gross and pungent dust as compared with a pure and gentle breeze.

546. 천국에 무척 있고는 싶은데 사실 천국에 있을 수는 없는 그런 사람들의 경우는 어떻게 되는지를 저로 하여금 알게 하시려고, 한번은 제가 하늘 어느 소사이어티에 있을 때, 한 천사가 머리에는 밝게 빛나는 파란 꽃들로 엮은 화관을 쓰고, 가슴에는 다른 색 꽃들로 꾸민 화환을 두른 유아로 제게 나타났습니다. In order that I might know how the case is with those who desire to be in heaven and are not such that they can be there, once when I was in some heavenly society, an angel appeared to me as an infant with a chaplet of bright blue flowers about its head, and girded about the breast with wreaths of other colors.

이걸 보고, 저는 그곳이 체어리티가 있는 어느 소사이어티임을 알았습니다. By this I was given to know that I was in some society where there was charity.

그때 어떤 착한 영들이 제가 있던 같은 소사이어티 안으로 들어왔는데, 그들은 들어오는 순간, 들어오기 전보다 훨씬 더 총명해져서 마치 천사적 영들처럼 말하는 것이었습니다. Some well-disposed spirits were then admitted into the same society, who the moment they entered became much more intelligent, and spoke like angelic spirits.

그 후, 어떤 영들이 들어왔는데 그들은 스스로 순진무구하기를 원하던 영들이었고, 그중 저에게 표현된 한 영의 상태는 젖을 입 밖으로 토하는 유아의 모습이었습니다. Afterwards some were admitted who desired to be innocent from themselves, whose state was represented to me by an infant that vomited milk out of its mouth.

이것이 그들의 상태였습니다. Such is their state.

Then some were admitted who supposed that they were intelligent from themselves, and their state was represented by their faces, which appeared sharp, but fair enough; and they seemed to wear a peaked hat from which a sharp point projected, but their faces did not appear to be of human flesh, but as if carved out and devoid of life.
