※ ‘철’의 속뜻, 자연적 진리

22절, 씰라는 두발가인을 낳았으니 그는 구리와 쇠로 여러 가지 기구를 만드는 자요 두발가인의 누이는 나아마였더라 And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron; and the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.

‘철’이 자연적 진리를 의미한다는 것은 에스겔 두로에 대한 말씀을 보면 더 분명합니다. That “iron” signifies natural truth is further evident from what Ezekiel says of Tyre:

12다시스는 각종 보화가 풍부하므로 너와 거래하였음이여 은과 철과 주석과 납을 네 물품과 바꾸어 갔도다, 19워단과 야완은 길쌈하는 실로 네 물품을 거래하였음이여 가공한 쇠와 계피와 대나무 제품이 네 상품 중에 있었도다 (겔27:12, 19) Tarshish was thy trader by reason of the multitude of all riches; in silver, iron, tin, and lead, they gave thy traffickings. Dan, and Javan, and Meusal furnished bright iron in thy tradings; cassia and calamus were in thy mart. (Ezek. 27:12, 19)

이 구절들뿐 아니라 같은 장 앞뒤 이어지는 구절들을 볼 때 정말 분명한 것은, 이 모든 표현이 천적, 영적 부들에 대한 의미라는 것과, 모든 특정 표현들, 하나하나 언급된 이름들까지 어떤 특별한 의미들이 있다는 것입니다. 주님의 말씀은 영이요, 말이 아니기 때문입니다. From these words, as well as from what is said both previously and subsequently in the same chapter, it is very evident that celestial and spiritual riches are signified; and that every particular expression, and even the names mentioned, have some specific signification, for the Word of the Lord is spiritual, and not verbal.

[2] 예레미야입니다. In Jeremiah:

12누가 능히 철 곧 북방의 철과 놋을 꺾으리요 13그러나 네 모든 죄로 말미암아 네 국경 안의 모든 재산과 보물로 값없이 탈취를 당하게 할 것이며 (렘15:12-13) Can one break iron, even iron from the north, and brass? Thy substance [facultates] and thy treasures will I give for a spoil without price, and this for all thy sins, (Jer. 15:12–13)

여기 ‘철’과 ‘놋’은 자연적 진리와 선을 의미하며, 그것이 ‘북방’(the north)에서 온다는 것은 그것이 감각적이고 자연적임을 의미합니다. 영적, 천적인 것에 비하면 상대적으로 짙은 흑암, 즉 ‘북방’과 같기 때문인데, 빛 혹은 ‘남방’(the south)에 비하면 상대적으로 말입니다. 또 그늘과도 같은데, 그늘은 두발-가인의 ‘어머니’인 ‘씰라’로 의미되는 것입니다. ‘재산’과 ‘보물’은 천적, 영적 부를 의미하는 게 아주 분명합니다. where “iron” and “brass” signify natural truth and good; that it came from the “north” signifies what is sensuous and natural; for what is natural, relatively to what is spiritual and celestial, is like thick darkness (that is, the “north”) relatively to light or the “south”; or like shade, which is also signified here by “Zillah,” who is the “mother.” That the “substance” and “treasures” are celestial and spiritual riches is also very evident.

[3] 다시 에스겔입니다. Again in Ezekiel:

또 철판을 가져다가 너와 성읍 사이에 두어 철벽을 삼고 성을 포위하는 것처럼 에워싸라 이것이 이스라엘 족속에게 징조가 되리라 (겔4:3) Take thou unto thee a pan of iron, and set it for a wall of iron between thee and the city, and set thy faces toward it, and let it be for a siege, and thou shalt straiten against it, (Ezek. 4:3)

여기도 역시 ‘철’이 진리를 의미하고 있음이 분명합니다. 강함은 진리의 속성입니다. 진리를 저항할 수 있는 것은 없기 때문입니다. 이런 이유로, 철을 가리켜 다니엘과 계시록에서, ‘부서뜨리다’, ‘깨뜨리다’ 하는 것입니다. ‘철’은 진리, 곧 신앙의 진리를 의미합니다. where also it is evident that “iron” signifies truth. Strength is attributed to truth, because it cannot be resisted, and for this reason it is said of iron—by which is signified truth, or the truth of faith—that it “breaks in pieces” and “crushes”; as in Daniel (2:34, 40), and in John:

26이기는 자와 끝까지 내 일을 지키는 그에게 만국을 다스리는 권세를 주리니 27그가 철장을 가지고 그들을 다스려 질그릇 깨뜨리는 것과 같이 하리라 나도 내 아버지께 받은 것이 그러하니라 (계2:26–27) He that overcometh, to him will I give sovereign power over the nations, that he may pasture them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers. (Rev. 2:26–27)

여자가 아들을 낳으니 이는 장차 철장으로 만국을 다스릴 남자라 그 아이를 하나님 앞과 그 보좌 앞으로 올려가더라 (계12:5) The woman brought forth a man child, who should pasture all nations with a rod of iron. (Rev. 12:5)

[4] ‘철장’(鐵杖, a rod of iron)은 주님의 말씀에 속한 진리임을 계시록에서는 설명하고 있습니다. That a “rod of iron” is the truth which is of the Word of the Lord, is explained in John:

11또 내가 하늘이 열린 것을 보니 보라 백마와 그것을 탄 자가 있으니 그 이름은 충신과 진실이라 그가 공의로 심판하며 싸우더라, 13또 그가 피 뿌린 옷을 입었는데 그 이름은 하나님의 말씀이라 칭하더라, 15그의 입에서 예리한 검이 나오니 그것으로 만국을 치겠고 친히 그들을 철장으로 다스리며 또 친히 하나님 곧 전능하신 이의 맹렬한 진노의 포도주 틀을 밟겠고 (계19:11, 13, 15) I saw heaven open, and behold a white horse, and he that sat upon him was called faithful and true, and in righteousness he doth judge and fight; He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood, and his name is called the Word of God; out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations; and he shall pasture them with a rod of iron. (Rev. 19:11, 13, 15)

단2:34, 40

34또 왕이 보신즉 손대지 아니한 돌이 나와서 신상의 쇠와 진흙의 발을 쳐서 부서뜨리매, 40넷째 나라는 강하기가 쇠 같으리니 쇠는 모든 물건을 부서뜨리고 이기는 것이라 쇠가 모든 것을 부수는 것 같이 그 나라가 뭇 나라를 부서뜨리고 찧을 것이며 (단2:34, 40)
