2땅이 혼돈하고 공허하며 흑암이 깊음 위에 있고 하나님의 영은 수면 위에 운행하시니라 Verse 2, And the earth was a void and emptiness, and thick darkness was upon the faces of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the faces of the waters.

거듭나기 전 사람의 상태는 주님의 선과 진리가 전혀 없어 혼돈과 공허, 흑암과 깊음의 상태이지만, 주님은 자비하셔서 그런 그의 안에 주님의 선과 진리의 지식으로 된 ‘리메인스’(remains)를 두시고, 마치 보석처럼 귀히 여기십니다. ‘남은 자’(a remnant)라고도 하는 이 리메인스는 그의 겉 사람에 속한 것들이 황폐해질 때까지는 드러나지 않습니다.

 

 

17. 거듭남이 시작되기 전 상태에 있는 사람을 가리켜 ‘땅이 혼돈하고 공허하다’(the earth void and empty), 또 ‘땅’(the ground)이라고도 하는데, 이는 아직 그 안에 선과 진리가 하나도 씨 뿌려지지 않은 상태를 말합니다. 여기서 ‘혼돈’(void)은 선이 하나도 없는 상태를, ‘공허’(empty)는 진리가 하나도 없는 상태를 말합니다. 그 결과, ‘흑암’(thick darkness) 상태, 즉 어리석은 상태가 되며, 주님 신앙(faith in the Lord)에 속한 모든 것에, 그래서 결과적으로는 영적, 천적(天的, heavenly) 생명에 관한 모든 것에 대해 무지한 상태가 됩니다. 그런 사람에 관해 주님은 예레미야에서 다음과 같이 말씀하십니다. Before his regeneration, man is called the “earth void and empty,” and also the “ground” wherein nothing of good and truth has been sown; “void” denotes where there is nothing of good, and “empty” where there is nothing of truth. Hence comes “thick darkness,” that is, stupidity, and an ignorance of all things belonging to faith in the Lord, and consequently of all things belonging to spiritual and heavenly life. Such a man is thus described by the Lord through Jeremiah:

 

22 내 백성은 나를 알지 못하는 어리석은 자요 지각이 없는 미련한 자식이라 악을 행하기에는 지각이 있으나 선을 행하기에는 무지하도다 23 보라 내가 땅을 본즉 혼돈하고 공허하며 하늘에는 빛이 없으며 (렘4:22-23) My people is stupid, they have not known me; they are foolish sons, and are not intelligent; they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge. I beheld the earth, and lo a void and emptiness, and the heavens, and they had no light. (Jer. 4:22–23)

 

18. ‘깊음 위’(The faces of the deep)는 거듭나지 않은 상태에 있는 사람의 탐욕과 거기서 나오는 거짓인데, 그는 전적으로 이런 것들로 되어 있는 사람이며, 이런 것들 안에 완전히 잠긴 사람입니다. 이 상태는 빛이라는 게 전혀 없는 상태로, 그는 뭔가 희미하고 혼란스러운, 즉 무슨 ‘깊음’(a deep)과도 같은그런 상태입니다. 이런 사람들을 가리켜 말씀 여러 군데에서는 표현하기를 ‘깊음’(deeps), ‘바다 깊은 곳’(depths of the sea)이라 하는데, 이는 사람이 거듭나기 전, ‘말리신’(dried up) 상태, ‘황폐해진’(wasted) 상태를 말합니다. 이사야입니다. The “faces of the deep” are the cupidities of the unregenerate man, and the falsities thence originating, of which he wholly consists, and in which he is totally immersed. In this state, having no light, he is like a “deep,” or something obscure and confused. Such persons are also called “deeps,” and “depths of the sea,” in many parts of the Word, which are “dried up,” or “wasted,” before man is regenerated. As in Isaiah:

 

9 여호와의 팔이여 깨소서 깨소서 능력을 베푸소서 옛날 옛 시대에 깨신 것 같이 하소서 라합을 저미시고 용을 찌르신 이가 어찌 주가 아니시며 10 바다를, 넓고 깊은 물을 말리시고 바다 깊은 곳에 길을 내어 구속받은 자들을 건너게 하신 이가 어찌 주가 아니시니이까 11 여호와께 구속받은 자들이 돌아와 노래하며 시온으로 돌아오니 영원한 기쁨이 그들의 머리 위에 있고 슬픔과 탄식이 달아나리이다 (사51:9-11) Awake as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art not thou it that drieth up the sea, the waters of the great deep, that maketh the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over? Therefore the redeemed of Jehovah shall return. (Isa. 51:9–11)

 

이런 사람은 또한 하늘에서 보면, 생기라고는 전혀 없는 무슨 까만 덩어리(a black mass)로 보이는데요, 일반적으로 이와 같은 의미로 사용되는 표현에는 인간의 황폐함(the vastation of man)이라는, 선지서에 자주 등장하는 표현이 있습니다. 이는 거듭남의 선행 상태, 즉 누구나 다 이런 상태에서 거듭남이 시작된다는 말입니다. 사람은 참된 것을 알 수 있기 전에, 그리고 선한 것으로 영향받기 전에, 먼저 이런 것의 유입을 방해하고, 거듭남에 저항하는 것들을 제거해야 하는데요. 이런 이유로, 새 사람(the new man)이 잉태될 수 있기 전에, 옛 사람(the old man)이 반드시 먼저 죽을 필요가 있는 것입니다. Such a man also, when seen from heaven, appears like a black mass, destitute of vitality. The same expressions likewise in general involve the vastation of man, frequently spoken of by the prophets, which precedes regeneration; for before man can know what is true, and be affected with what is good, there must be a removal of such things as hinder and resist their admission; thus the old man must needs die, before the new man can be conceived.

 

19. ‘하나님의 영’(the spirit of God)은 주님의 자비(the Lord’s mercy)를 의미하는데, 이를 가리켜 ‘운행하시니라’(to move)라든지, 혹은 마치 암탉이 자기 알을 품듯 ‘품으시다’(to brood)로 표현하고 있습니다. ‘하나님의 영은 수면 위에 운행하시니라’는 주님이 사람 안에 숨겨 보석처럼 소중하게 보관해 오신 것들을 가리킵니다. 말씀 전반에 걸쳐 이것을 ‘리메인스’(remains), 즉 ‘남은 자’(a remnant)라 하는데, 이는 진리와 선에 관한 지식으로 이루어집니다. 이 리메인스라는 것은 겉에 속한 것들(external things)이 황폐해질 때까지는 결코 빛이나 낮(day) 가운데 드러나지 않는 것입니다. 이들 지식을 여기서는 ‘수면 위’(the faces of the waters)로 표현하고 있습니다. By the “spirit of God” is meant the Lord’s mercy, which is said to “move,” or “brood,” as a hen broods over her eggs. The things over which it moves are such as the Lord has hidden and treasured up in man, which in the Word throughout are called remains or a remnant, consisting of the knowledges of the true and of the good, which never come into light or day, until external things are vastated. These knowledges are here called “the faces of the waters.”
