Genesis 6

1사람이 땅 위에 번성하기 시작할 때에 그들에게서 딸들이 나니 And it came to pass that man began to multiply himself upon the faces of the ground, and daughters were born unto them. 2하나님의 아들들이 사람의 딸들의 아름다움을 보고 자기들이 좋아하는 모든 여자를 아내로 삼는지라 And the sons of God saw the daughters of man that they were good; and they took to themselves wives of all that they chose. 3여호와께서 이르시되 나의 영이 영원히 사람과 함께 하지 아니하리니 이는 그들이 육신이 됨이라 그러나 그들의 날은 백이십 년이 되리라 하시니라 And Jehovah said, My spirit shall not reprove man forever, for that he is flesh; and his days shall be a hundred and twenty years. 4당시에 땅에는 네피림이 있었고 그 후에도 하나님의 아들들이 사람의 딸들에게로 들어와 자식을 낳았으니 그들은 용사라 고대에 명성이 있는 사람들이었더라 There were Nephilim in the earth in those days; and most especially after the sons of God went in unto the daughters of man, and they bare to them; the same became mighty men, who were of old, men of renown. 5여호와께서 사람의 죄악이 세상에 가득함과 그의 마음으로 생각하는 모든 계획이 항상 악할 뿐임을 보시고 And Jehovah saw that the evil of man was multiplied on the earth, and that all the imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil every day. 6땅 위에 사람 지으셨음을 한탄하사 마음에 근심하시고 And it repented Jehovah that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. 7이르시되 내가 창조한 사람을 내가 지면에서 쓸어버리되 사람으로부터 가축과 기는 것과 공중의 새까지 그리하리니 이는 내가 그것들을 지었음을 한탄함이니라 하시니라 And Jehovah said, I will destroy man whom I have created, from upon the faces of the ground, both man and beast, and creeping thing, and fowl of the heavens; for it repenteth me that I have made him. 8그러나 노아는 여호와께 은혜를 입었더라 And Noah found grace in the eyes of Jehovah.

THE CONTENTS

554. 여기서 다루는 주제는 홍수 전 사람들의 상태입니다. The subject here treated of is the state of the people before the flood.

555. 사람과 더불어 교회가 있었던 곳에 갈망(yearnings, 욕구, 욕망, appetites)이 일어나 사람과 교회를 다스리기 시작했습니다. 이 갈망이 바로 ‘딸들’입니다. That with man, where the church was, yearnings—which are the “daughters”—began to reign.

그들은 또한 신앙의 가르침들과 자신들의 갈망을 단단히 묶어, 그 결과, 자기들이 악과 거짓 가운데 있음을 확실히 했습니다. 이것을 ‘하나님의 아들들이 사람의 딸들의 아름다움을 보고 자기들이 좋아하는 모든 여자를 아내로 삼는지라’라는 표현으로 말씀하신 것입니다. (1-2절) Also that they conjoined the doctrinal things of faith with their yearnings, and thus confirmed themselves in evils and falsities, which is signified by “the sons of God taking to themselves wives of the daughters of man” (verses 1–2).

556. 그 결과, 선과 진리의 리메인스가 하나도 남지 않게 되었고, 이런 상황에서 주님은 그럼에도 불구하고 사람들로 하여금 리메인스를 습득하여 계속해서 지니고 있게 하시려고 사람들을 새롭게 만드시려는 마음을 먹으셨습니다. ‘백이십 년’은 리메인스를 가리킵니다. (3절) And whereas there were thus no remains of good and truth left, it is foretold that man should be differently formed, in order that he might have remains, which are “a hundred and twenty years” (verse 3).

557. 신앙의 가르침들을 자기들이 가진 욕망 실현의 도구로 이용하고, 이런 상태로 자기를 사랑하고, 자아를 사랑하면서, 남들과 비교, 자기들만이 가진 위대함이 얼마나 뛰어난지, 자기들이 얼마나 중요한 사람들인지 하는, 끔찍할 정도로 소름 돋는 망상, 즉 종교적 신념에 사로잡힌 사람들, 이런 자들이 바로 ‘네피림’입니다. (4절) Those who immersed the doctrinal things of faith in their yearnings, and in consequence of this as well as of the love of self conceived dreadful persuasions of their own greatness in comparison with others, are signified by the “Nephilim” (verse 4).

558. 이렇게 되고 나자 선과 진리에 관한 무슨 의지나 퍼셉션은 더 이상 세상에 존재하지 않게 되었습니다. (5절) In consequence of this there no longer remained any will or perception of good and truth (verse 5).

559. ‘한탄하사 마음에 근심하시고’는 주님의 자비(mercy)에 대한 묘사입니다. (6절) The mercy of the Lord is described by “repenting and grieving at heart” (verse 6).

그들은 이런 갈망과 이런 신념은 사람을 반드시 죽음에 이르게 하고 만다는 것을 입증한 그런 사람들이었습니다. (7절) That they became such that their yearnings and persuasions must needs prove fatal to them (verse 7).

이런 상황에서, 인류가 건짐을, 구원을 받을 수 있으려면 새로운 교회가 반드시 일어나야 했는데, 그 교회가 바로 ‘노아’입니다. (8절) Therefore in order that the human race might be saved, a new church should arise, which is “Noah” (verse 8).

CONCERNING HEAVEN AND HEAVENLY JOY

553. 천국에서 서로 사랑 가운데 있는 그들은 그들 젊음의 봄날을 향해 끊임없이 나아갑니다. 그들은 수천 년을 더 살면 살수록 더욱 더 기쁘고 행복한 봄을 향해 나아갑니다. 이것은 서로 사랑, 체어리티, 그리고 신앙의 진보와 정도에 따라 영원히 계속해서 증가합니다. They who are in mutual love in heaven are continually advancing to the springtime of their youth, and to a more and more gladsome and happy spring the more thousands of years they live, and this with continual increase to eternity, according to the advance and degree of mutual love, charity, and faith.

나이 들고 오랜 세월 쇠약해져 죽은, 주님 신앙, 이웃 사랑, 그리고 남편과 행복한 결혼애 안에서 살아온 여성들은 시간이 흐르면서 점점 더 꽃 같은 젊음과 꽃다운 시절, 그리고 육안으로는 결코 지각할 수 없는, 미(美)에 대한 모든 관념을 다 초월해 버리는 아름다움 속으로 들어갑니다. 그들의 본 모습(likeness)을 꾸미고 표현하며, 체어리티의 즐거움과 아름다움으로 하여금 얼굴의 모든 아주 미세한 데서부터 뿜어져 나오게 하는 것은 바로 그들의 선과 체어리티이기 때문입니다. 그들은 체어리티의 모습들(forms) 그 자체입니다. 더러는 그들을 보고 무척 놀라워했습니다. Those of the female sex who have died in old age and enfeebled with years, and who have lived in faith in the Lord, in charity toward the neighbor, and in happy conjugial love with their husbands, after a succession of years come more and more into the bloom of youth and early womanhood, and into a beauty that surpasses all idea of beauty such as is ever perceptible to the natural sight; for it is goodness and charity forming and presenting their own likeness, and causing the delight and beauty of charity to shine forth from every least feature of the countenance, so that they are the very forms of charity: some have beheld them and been amazed.

체어리티의 모습은, 이런 관념적인 것들이 저 세상 삶에서는 표상과 외관으로 보이기 때문에, 초상화처럼 그림으로 그리거나 그려진 체어리티 자체입니다. 이것은 전체적인 천사, 특히 천사의 얼굴이 천사의 내면을 온전히 표현하는 것과 같은 방식인데요, 이렇게 초상화 그림처럼 보이는 체어리티는 보기에도 분명히 체어리티요, 마음으로 지각하기에도 분명히 체어리티인 그런 생생한 체어리티입니다. The form of charity, as is seen to the life in the other world, is such that it is charity itself that portrays and is portrayed, and this in such a manner that the whole angel, and especially the face, is as it were charity, the charity both plainly appearing to the view and being perceived by the mind.

이 모습을 눈으로 보게 되면, 그 말로 도저히 표현할 수 없는 아름다움 때문에, 보는 사람의 마음 저 안쪽 가장 깊은 생명은 감동으로 가득 찹니다. When this form is beheld, it is unutterable beauty that affects with charity the very inmost life of the beholder’s mind.

이런 아름다운 모습을 통해서 신앙의 진리들이, 하나의 이미지로 볼 수 있도록 제공되며, 심지어 그 이미지로부터 지각까지 됩니다. Through the beauty of this form the truths of faith are presented to view in an image, and are even perceived from it.

주님 신앙, 곧 체어리티 신앙으로 살아온 사람들은 저 세상에서는 이런 모습들, 즉, 아름다움들이 됩니다. Such forms, or such beauties, do those become in the other life who have lived in faith in the Lord, that is, in the faith of charity.

모든 천사들은 헤아릴 수 없는 다양함과 함께 모두 이런 모습들이며, 이런 곳이 바로 천국입니다. All the angels are such forms, with countless variety, and of such is heaven.

CONTINUATION CONCERNING HEAVENAND HEAVENLY JOY

545. 저로 하여금 천국과 천국 기쁨의 본질과 퀄러티에 대해 알게 하시려고 주님은 오랫동안 종종 제가 천국 기쁨의 즐거움을 지각할 수 있도록 허락하셨습니다. 그래서 저는 그것이 어떤 것인지를 이런 실제 경험을 통해 알게 되었지만 그러나 그것을 말로, 글로 설명하는 것은 불가능합니다. But in order that I might know the nature and quality of heaven and of heavenly joy, for long and often I have been permitted by the Lord to perceive the delights of heavenly joys, so that as I know them from actual experience I can indeed know them, but can by no means describe them.

하지만 제가 다음과 같이라도 말씀드리면 혹시 그것이 어떤 것인지를 살짝 가늠하실 수 있지 않을까 합니다. 천국의 기쁨은 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 즐거움과 기쁨을 수반하는 일종의 어펙션입니다. 이 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 즐거움과 기쁨이 전면적으로 동시에 경험되는 하나의 기쁨인데요, 이 전면적인 기쁨, 즉, 전면적인 어펙션 안에는 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 어펙션들이 조화를 이루며 존재합니다. 이때 이것은 하나하나 뚜렷이 지각되는 게 아니고, 모호하게 지각됩니다. 퍼셉션이 매우 전면적이기 때문입니다. However, in order to give some idea of it I may say that heavenly joy is an affection of innumerable delights and joys that form one general simultaneous joy, in which general joy, that is, in which general affection, there are harmonies of innumerable affections that do not come distinctly to perception, but obscurely, because the perception is very general.

그럼에도 불구하고 저는 허락하심을 받아 그 안, 천국의 기쁨 안에는 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 것들이 내재하고 있음을 지각할 수 있었습니다. 그것들은 말로는 도저히 어떻게 설명할 수 없는 질서로 내재해 있었는데, 바로 천국의 질서로부터 흐르는 질서였습니다. Yet I was permitted to perceive that there are things innumerable within it, in such order as can never be described, these innumerable things being such as flow from the order of heaven.

이런 질서는 그 어펙션 모든 가장 미세한 것에까지 존재하며, 함께 합쳐 그 전체가 하나로 보이고, 그것의 주제, 곧 그 어펙션을 느끼고 있는 그 사람의 역량에 따라 아주 전체적인 것으로 지각됩니다. Such order exists in every least thing of the affection, all of which together are presented and perceived as a very general one according to the capacity of him who is the subject of it.

한 마디로, 모든 전반적인 기쁨 혹은 어펙션에는 가장 온전한 형태로 조성된, 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 것들이 존재하지만, 살아있지 않거나 우리 안 가장 내적인 것에까지 영향을 미치지 않는 것은 전혀 없습니다. 천국의 기쁨은 가장 내적인 것들에서 비롯되기 때문입니다. In a word, in every general joy or affection there are illimitable things ordinated in a most perfect form, and there is nothing that is not alive or that does not affect even the inmost things of our being, for heavenly joys proceed from inmost things.

저는 또 지각하기를, 그 기쁨과 상쾌함은 마치 심장에서 나와 모든 가장 미세한 섬유조직들을 통해, 그리고 그렇게 조직 다발 속으로, 즐거움의 가장 내적 감각을 가지고 자신들을 아주 부드럽게 퍼트리는 것 같았으며, 이것은 마치 기쁨과 상쾌함만 남은 섬유조직 같았고, 이런 가운데서 나온 퍼셉션과 감각의 영향권 역시 전체적으로 그 행복하게 살아있는 것이 같았습니다. I perceived also that the joy and deliciousness came as if from the heart, and very softly diffused themselves through all the inmost fibers, and so into the congregated fibers, with such an inmost sense of delight that the fiber is as it were nothing but joy and deliciousness, and the whole derivative perceptive and sensitive sphere the same, being alive with happiness.

이들 기쁨들을 육체적 쾌락이 주는 기쁨과 비교하자면, 전자는 맑고 부드러운 산들바람 같다면, 후자는 역겹고 퀘퀘한 먼지와도 같다 할 수 있습니다. In comparison with these joys the joy of bodily pleasures is like gross and pungent dust as compared with a pure and gentle breeze.

546. 천국에 무척 있고는 싶은데 사실 천국에 있을 수는 없는 그런 사람들의 경우는 어떻게 되는지를 저로 하여금 알게 하시려고, 한번은 제가 하늘 어느 소사이어티에 있을 때, 한 천사가 머리에는 밝게 빛나는 파란 꽃들로 엮은 화관을 쓰고, 가슴에는 다른 색 꽃들로 꾸민 화환을 두른 유아로 제게 나타났습니다. In order that I might know how the case is with those who desire to be in heaven and are not such that they can be there, once when I was in some heavenly society, an angel appeared to me as an infant with a chaplet of bright blue flowers about its head, and girded about the breast with wreaths of other colors.

이걸 보고, 저는 그곳이 체어리티가 있는 어느 소사이어티임을 알았습니다. By this I was given to know that I was in some society where there was charity.

그때 어떤 착한 영들이 제가 있던 같은 소사이어티 안으로 들어왔는데, 그들은 들어오는 순간, 들어오기 전보다 훨씬 더 총명해져서 마치 천사적 영들처럼 말하는 것이었습니다. Some well-disposed spirits were then admitted into the same society, who the moment they entered became much more intelligent, and spoke like angelic spirits.

그 후, 어떤 영들이 들어왔는데 그들은 스스로 순진무구하기를 원하던 영들이었고, 그중 저에게 표현된 한 영의 상태는 젖을 입 밖으로 토하는 유아의 모습이었습니다. Afterwards some were admitted who desired to be innocent from themselves, whose state was represented to me by an infant that vomited milk out of its mouth.

이것이 그들의 상태였습니다. Such is their state.

그때 또 어떤 영들이 들어왔는데, 그들은 스스로를 지성적이다, 총명하다 여기던 영들이었습니다. 그들의 상태가 그들의 얼굴로 표현되었는데, 날카로워 보였으나 매우 고왔습니다. 그들은 날카로운 부분이 돌출된, 끝이 뾰족한 모자를 쓰고 있는 것 같았는데, 그런데 그들의 얼굴은 사람의 살처럼 보이지가 않았습니다. 마치 칼로 깎은 듯, 생명이 없는 듯한 얼굴이었습니다. Then some were admitted who supposed that they were intelligent from themselves, and their state was represented by their faces, which appeared sharp, but fair enough; and they seemed to wear a peaked hat from which a sharp point projected, but their faces did not appear to be of human flesh, but as if carved out and devoid of life.

이런 것은 스스로를 우리는 영적이다, 즉, 스스로를 우리는 신앙을 가졌다 믿는 사람들의 상태입니다. Such is the state of those who believe that they are spiritual from themselves, that is, able from themselves to have faith.

거기 머무를 수 없는 다른 영들이 들어왔는데, 실망들을 하며, 괴로워들을 하더니, 가버리는 것이었습니다. Other spirits were admitted who could not remain there, but were dismayed, became distressed, and fled away.
