사람의 얼굴을 보면 상응을 이해할 수 있을 것이다. 꾸밈없는 얼굴에는 그 마음의 모든 성정(all the affections of the mind)이 눈에 보이는 물질적 형태로 나타난다. 그래서 얼굴을 마음의 표지(the index of the mind)라 부른다. 즉 얼굴은 자연계에 드러난, 사람의 영계인 것이다. 같은 방법으로, 사람의 사고력에 속한 것(what pertains to the understanding)은 그의 말에 나타나고, 의지에 속한 것은 몸의 행동에 나타난다. 따라서 얼굴이건 말이나 행동이건 몸으로 행하는 모든 것은 상응이다. From the human face it can be seen what correspondence is. In a face that has not been taught to dissemble, all the affections of the mind present themselves to view in a natural form, as in their type. This is why the face is called the index of the mind; that is, it is man’s spiritual world presented in his natural world. So, too, what pertains to the understanding is presented in speech, and what pertains to the will is presented in the movements of the body. So whatever effects are produced in the body, whether in the face, in speech, or in bodily movements, are called correspondences.

※ 즉 그가 하는 말을 듣고 그가 어떤 understanding의 사람인지, 그가 하는 행동을 보고 그가 어떤 will의 사람인지를 안다는 것입니다. 말은 understanding과, 행동은 will과 상응하기 때문이며, 사람의 겉과 속은 이렇게 상응합니다.

사람은 가장 작은 형태의 천국(위 57번 글 참조)이자 자연계이기 때문에, 사람에게는 영계와 자연계가 공존한다. 그의 마음에 속하는 내적 차원(The interior things), 즉 사고력과 의지(understanding and will)에 관계되는 것은 그의 영계를 이루고, 몸에 속하는 외적 차원, 즉 몸의 감각과 행동에 관계되는 것은 자연계를 이룬다. 따라서 그의 영계에서 비롯된 그의 자연계에 속한 것은 모두 그 사람의 영계의 상응이다. Since man is both a heaven and a world in least form after the image of the greatest (see above, n. 57), there is in him both a spiritual and a natural world. The interior things that belong to his mind, and that have relation to understanding and will, constitute his spiritual world; while the exterior things that belong to his body, and that have relation to its senses and activities, constitute his natural world. Consequently, everything in his natural world (that is, in his body and its senses and activities), that has its existence from his spiritual world (that is, from his mind and its understanding and will) is called a correspondent.

※ 자연계의 모든 것이 영계로부터 나왔고, 그래서 자연계의 모든 것은 영계의 상응이라는 말은, 자연계에 존재하는 어떤 것은 영계에 존재하는 어떤 걸 상징한다는 말입니다. 영계에 있기 때문에 자연계에 존재한다는 말이지요. 앞서 보았듯, 천국 전체가 한 사람 모습이기 때문에, 우리가 지상, 이 자연계에서 이렇게 몸을 입고 있다는 말입니다. 그뿐이겠습니까? 몸에는 머리와 몸통, 팔과 다리가 있듯 그에 해당하는 천국 공동체들 또한 있는 것이며, 그뿐이겠습니까? 이런 상응은 더욱더 자세히, 그리고 깊어집니다. 각 세포 및 분자, 원자 수준으로까지 말이지요.

먼저 상응이 무엇인지 설명하겠다. 자연계 전체는 영계에 상응하는데, 단지 일반적으로만이 아니라 세부적인 모든 것이 상응한다. 따라서 영계로부터 나와서 자연계에 존재하는 모든 것이 영계와 상응한다고 할 수 있다. 반드시 알아야 할 것은, 자연계는 영계로부터 생겨나고(springs from) 영계에 의해 지속된다(has permanent existence from)는 것이다. 이 관계는 정확히 결과와 원인의 관계와 같다. 여기서 자연계는 태양 아래 그 빛과 열을 받는 모든 것과 그 전체 범위를 말한다. 거기서 형성돼 지속되는 모든 것이 자연계에 속한다. 그러나 영계는 천국을 말하고, 천국의 모든 것은 영계에 속한다. First, what correspondence is. The whole natural world corresponds to the spiritual world, and not merely the natural world in general, but also every particular of it; and as a consequence everything in the natural world that springs from the spiritual world is called a correspondent. It must be understood that the natural world springs from and has permanent existence from the spiritual world, precisely like an effect from its effecting cause. All that is spread out under the sun and that receives heat and light from the sun is what is called the natural world; and all things that derive their subsistence therefrom belong to that world. But the spiritual world is heaven; and all things in the heavens belong to that world.
