※ 모든 사람은 자기 안에 있는 천국의 특성에 맞게 밖에 있는 천국을 받아들이고, 마찬가지로 주님을 받아들인다. 천국은 주의 신성으로 이루어졌기 때문이다. 따라서 주께서 천국 공동체에 임하실 때는 그 사회의 선의 특성에 맞게 공동체마다 다르게 나타나신다.

모든 사람은 자기 안에 있는 천국의 특성에 맞게 밖에 있는 천국을 받아들이고, 마찬가지로 주님을 받아들인다. 천국은 주의 신성으로 이루어졌기 때문이다. 따라서 주께서 천국 공동체에 임하실 때는 그 사회의 선의 특성에 맞게 공동체마다 다르게 나타나신다. 이 다양성은 주께 있는 것이 아니라 자기의 선을 통해 그에 맞게 주를 보는 천사들에게 있는 것이다. 심지어 그들이 주의 임하심에 감동하는 것도 그들의 사랑의 성질에 따라 다르다. 주를 가장 내적으로 사랑하는 천사들은 가장 깊이 감동하고, 주를 덜 사랑하는 이들은 덜 감동하며, 천국 바깥에 있는 악한 영들은 주께서 나타나시면 고통을 느낀다. 주께서 어느 천사 사회에든지 나타나실 때는 한 명의 천사로 보이시는데, 그러나 그 신성의 광휘로 다른 천사들과 확연히 구분되신다. As everyone receives the heaven that is outside of him in accordance with the quality of the heaven that is within him, so in like manner does everyone receive the Lord, since it is the Divine of the Lord that makes heaven. And for this reason when the Lord becomes manifestly present in any society his appearance there is in accord with the quality of the good in which the society is, thus not the same in one society as in another. This diversity is not in the Lord; it is in the angels who behold him from their own good, and thus in accordance with their good. And they are affected by his appearance in accordance with the quality of their love, those who love him inmostly being inmostly affected, and those who love him less being less affected; while the evil who are outside of heaven are tortured by his presence. When the Lord is seen in any society he is seen as an angel, but is distinguished from others by the Divine that shines through.

어떤 경우에도 천국이 누구의 밖에 있다고 할 수 없다. 천국은 사람 안에 있다. 모든 천사는 그 자신 안에 있는 천국에 따라서 밖에 있는 천국을 받아들인다. 그러므로 천국 가는 것이 단순히 천사들 있는 곳으로 올라가는 것이라고 믿거나, 자기 내면생활과 상관없이 하나님 은혜로 단번에 천국에 간다고 믿는 것이 얼마나 오류인지 알 수 있을 것이다.주51 사실은 천국이 그 사람 안에 있지 않으면, 외부에 있는 천국의 어떤 것도 그에게 들어오지 못하고, 그가 받아들일 수도 없는 것이다. 앞서와 같은 잘못된 생각을 가진 영들이 많이 있다. 이 오류를 바로잡기 위해 그들을 천국으로 끌어올려 보면, 그들의 내면생활이 천사들과 상반되기 때문에 지적 기능이 마비되어 눈이 멀고 미련해진다. 게다가 의지 기능이 고통을 당해 광적인 행동을 하게 된다. 한마디로, 악한 생활을 한 사람이 천국에 들어가면 물 밖의 물고기처럼, 진공관 속의 동물처럼 숨을 못 쉬고, 몸을 뒤틀게 된다. 이것으로 천국이 외부에 있는 것이 아니라 사람 안에 있음을 확실히 알 수 있다.주52 It can in no sense be said that heaven is outside of anyone; it is within him. For it is in accordance with the heaven that is within him that each angel receives the heaven that is outside of him. This makes clear how greatly misled is he who believes that to come into heaven is simply to be taken up among angels, without regard to what one’s interior life may be, thus that heaven is granted to each one by mercy apart from means;51 when, in fact, unless heaven is within one, nothing of the heaven that is outside can flow in and be received. There are many spirits who have this idea. Because of this belief they have been taken up into heaven; but when they came there, because their interior life was contrary to the angelic life, their intellectual faculties began to be blinded until they became like fools; and they began to be tortured in their voluntary faculties until they became like madmen. In a word, if those that have lived wickedly come into heaven they gasp for breath and writhe about, like fishes out of water in the air, or like animals in ether in an air pump when the air has been exhausted. From this it can be seen that heaven is not outside of a man, but within him.52

주51. 천국은 내면과 분리된 자비만으로는 들어갈 수 없다. 오히려 그 반대, 곧 삶이, 생활이 받쳐줘야 한다. 주님으로 말미암아 사람이 천국까지 인도함을 받는 일생의 모든 것이 자비에 속하며, 자비, 곧 은혜란 바로 이런 것을 말한다. Heaven is not granted from mercy apart from means, but in accordance with the life; yet everything of the life by which man is led to heaven by the Lord belongs to mercy; this is what is meant by mercy (n. 5057, 10659). 만일 천국이 내면의 준비와 상관없이 그저 은혜로만 갈 수 있는 데라면, 천국은 모든 사람이 다 들어갈 수 있는 데가 된다. If heaven were granted from mercy apart from means it would be granted to all (n. 2401). 천국을 내면의 준비 같은 거 필요 없이 단순히 은혜로 들어가는 곳이라고 믿었으나 사후, 정작 천국에는 못 들어가고 내던져짐을 당한 어느 악한 영들에 관하여 About some evil spirits cast down from heaven who believed that heaven was granted to everyone from mercy apart from means (n. 4226).

한 공동체가 작은 천국이듯, 한 천사는 가장 작은 형태의 천국이다. 천국은 천사 안에 있기 때문이다. 천사의 마음 안에 있는 내면성들은 천국의 형태로 배치되어 있으며, 따라서 자기 외부에 있는 천국의 모든 것을 받을 수 있게 되어 있다. 또 그것을 받아들이는 것은, 주님으로부터 나와 천사 안에 들어 있는 선의 특성에 따른다. 이 선 때문에 천사는 천사가 되고, 천국이 된다. As an entire society is a heaven in a smaller form, so an angel is a heaven in the smallest form. For heaven is not outside of the angel, but is within him, since the interior things which belong to his mind are arranged into the form of heaven, thus for the reception of all things of heaven that are outside of him. These also he receives according to the quality of the good that is in him from the Lord. It is from this that an angel is a heaven.
