58. 30절, 또 땅의 모든 짐승과 하늘의 모든 새와 생명이 있어 땅에 기는 모든 것에게는 내가 모든 푸른 풀을 먹을거리로 주노라 하시니 그대로 되니라 Verse 30. And to every wild animal of the earth, and to every fowl of the heavens, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth wherein is a living soul, every green herb for food; and it was so.

같은 인간, 즉 영적 인간의 자연적 음식을 여기서는 설명하고 있습니다. The natural meat of the same man is here described.

‘땅의 모든 짐승’, 그리고 ‘하늘의 모든 새’는 인간의 자연적인 면을 상징합니다. 자연적 인간의 양식으로는 채소와 푸른 풀이 주어지고 있습니다. His natural is signified by the “wild animal of the earth” and by the “fowl of the heavens,” to which there are given for food the vegetable and the green of the herb.

사람의 자연적, 영적 양식을 그래서 시편에서는 이렇게 노래하고 있습니다. Both his natural and his spiritual food are thus described in David:

그가 가축을 위한 풀과 사람을 위한 채소를 자라게 하시며 땅에서 먹을 것이 나게 하셔서 (시104:14) Jehovah causeth the grass to grow for the beast, and herb for the service of man, that he may bring forth bread out of the earth, (Ps. 104:14)

여기서 ‘가축’은 같은 시편 앞선 구절들인 11절, 12절에서 언급한 ‘땅의 모든 짐승’과 ‘하늘의 모든 새’ 둘 다를 표현하기 위해 쓰이고 있습니다. where the term “beast” is used to express both the wild animal of the earth and the fowl of the heavens which are mentioned in verses 11 and 12 of the same psalm.

59. 여기서 자연적 인간의 양식으로 ‘채소와 푸른 풀’만 언급되는 이유는 다음과 같습니다. The reason why the “vegetable and the green of the herb” only are here described as food for the natural man is this.

거듭남의 과정을 보면, 사람이 영적 인간이 되어 갈수록, 한편으로는 지속적으로 영적 전투, 싸움 가운데 놓이게 됩니다. 그래서 주님의 교회를 ‘전투적’(militant)이라고 하는 것이지요. 거듭남 이전 사람은 탐욕(cupidities)이 주(主, the dominion)가 되기 때문인데요, 사람은 그 전체가 그저 탐욕과 탐욕에서 나오는 거짓(falsities)으로만 되어 있기 때문입니다. In the course of regeneration, when man is being made spiritual, he is continually engaged in combat, on which account the church of the Lord is called “militant”; for before regeneration cupidities have the dominion, because the whole man is composed of mere cupidities and the falsities thence derived.

※ 거듭남이란 악과 거짓의 사람이 선과 진리의 사람으로 변화되어 가는 과정이므로, 필연적으로 선악 간, 진리와 거짓 간 영적 전투가 일어납니다. 이것이 정상이며, 한 가운데 나를 놓고 두 세계, 곧 지옥과 천국에서 파송된 악한 영들과 천사들의, 서로 자기 쪽으로 나를 데리고 가고자 하는 싸움이 반드시, 그리고 누구에게나 일어납니다.

거듭나는 동안 이들 탐욕과 거짓이 즉각 폐지될 수는 없습니다. 왜냐하면, 이 두 가지는 사람이 살면서 습득하여 온 유일한 생명인데, 만일 그런 일이 발생하면 사람은 그냥 통째로 파괴되기 때문입니다. 이런 이유로 악한 영들이 사람 안에서 오랫동안 그와 함께 하면서 겪는 일들은 다음과 같습니다. 그들은 사람의 탐욕을 자극하여 흥분시킵니다. 그리고 계속 그러다 보면 살짝 느슨, 사람은 늘 반복되는 그 탐욕에 시큰둥해지는데요, 이런 케이스는 헤아릴 수 없을 정도로 많지요. 어느 정도로 느슨해지냐면, 이 탐욕이 주님에 의해 선쪽으로 기울어져 사람이 개혁이 될 정도로까지입니다. During regeneration these cupidities and falsities cannot be instantaneously abolished, for this would be to destroy the whole man, such being the only life which he has acquired; and therefore evil spirits are suffered to continue with him for a long time, that they may excite his cupidities, and that these may thus be loosened, in innumerable ways, even to such a degree that they can be inclined by the Lord to good, and the man be thus reformed.

※ 주님은 사람을 잘 아십니다. 사람은 심지어 천국 생활조차도 늘 똑같으면 금방 지루해 하며, 싫증을 내는 존재라는 것을 말입니다. 한편, 주님은 정말 한결같으시고, 영원하신 분입니다. 사람의 한 평생, 끝까지 책임지시고, 동행하시는 분입니다. 주님은 사랑 그 자체이셔서, 끝까지 사랑하십니다. 그러므로 아무리 악한 영들이 애를 써도 사람이 정신만 차리고 있으면 주님은 마침내 이기시며, 사람을 구원하시고, 그의 거듭남을 완성하십니다.

전투 때, 악한 영들은, 선과 진리인 모든 것에 대해, 즉, 주님을 향한 사랑과 신앙에 관한 거라면 무엇이든지 아주아주 극도로 증오합니다. 오직 이런 것이야말로 선이요, 진리여서 그 안에 영원한 생명이 있기 때문인데요, 악한 영들은 사람에게 고작해야 ‘채소와 푸른 풀’이라 할 수 있는 것 밖에 아무 것도 남기질 않습니다. 이것이 악한 영들의 정체입니다. 그러나 저들과는 정반대로, 주님은 그에게 ‘씨 맺는 채소’, ‘씨 가진 열매 맺는 모든 나무’라 할 수 있는 것들을 양식으로 주십니다. 이때 사람은 더할나위 없는 고요와 평안, 기쁨과 즐거움의 상태에 있게 되는데요, 주님은 이런 양식을 간격을 두고 계속 주십니다. In the time of combat, the evil spirits, who bear the utmost hatred against all that is good and true, that is, against whatever is of love and faith toward the Lord—which things alone are good and true, because they have eternal life in them—leave the man nothing else for food but what is compared to the vegetable and the green of the herb; nevertheless the Lord gives him also a food which is compared to the herb bearing seed, and to the tree in which is fruit, which are states of tranquillity and peace, with their joys and delights; and this food the Lord gives the man at intervals.

※ 여기서 우리는 세상이 주는, 악한 영들이 주는 달콤한 것의 그 숨은 정체를 정확히 꿰뚫어 보아야 합니다. 아무리 그럴듯해 보여도 그것은 그 안에 생명이 없는, 결국은 ‘채소와 푸른 풀’에 지나지 않는다는 사실을 말입니다. 오직 주님만이 ‘씨 맺는 채소’, ‘씨 가진 열매 맺는 모든 나무’, 곧 그 안에 선과 진리가 있어 우리로 하여금 영원한 생명에 들어가게 하시는 분이심을 깊이 명심해야 합니다.

[2] 주님이 인간을 매순간, 아니 눈깜빡할 순간이라도 막아주시지 않으면, 인간은 즉시 소멸될 것입니다. 주님을 향한 사랑과 신앙에 관계된 것들에 관한, 형언할 수 없을 정도로 끔찍하고 지독한 증오가 영들의 세계에 만연하고 있기 때문입니다. Unless the Lord defended man every moment, yea, even the smallest part of every moment, he would instantly perish, in consequence of the indescribably intense and mortal hatred which prevails in the world of spirits against the things relating to love and faith toward the Lord.

이 사실을 저는 확실히 말씀드릴 수 있는데요, 지난 수년 간, (저는 분명히 몸 안에 있음에도) 저세상의 영들, 특히 아주 못된 영들과 본의아니게 어울려 왔습니다. 주님의 허락하심으로 저는 수천의 영들에 둘러싸이기도 했고, 그들은 저를 향해 독을 뱉기도 했습니다. 모든 가능한 방법으로 그들은 저를 향해 우글거렸지요. 하지만 그들은 제 머리카락 한 올 조차 건드릴 수 없었는데, 그것은 제가 주님의 보호 아래 안전할 수 있었기 때문입니다. The certainty of this fact I can affirm, having been now for some years (notwithstanding my remaining in the body) associated with spirits in the other life, even with the worst of them, and I have sometimes been surrounded by thousands, to whom it was permitted to spit forth their venom, and infest me by all possible methods, yet without their being able to hurt a single hair of my head, so secure was I under the Lord’s protection.

이런 여러 해 경험으로, 저는 정말 영들의 세계와 그 어떠함에 대하여, 그리고 현재 거듭남 가운데 있는 사람들이 왜 반드시 참아야 하고, 그래서 영생의 행복을 왜 반드시 기필코 얻어내야 하는지 하는, 영적 전투에 대하여 정말 철저하게 알게 되었습니다. From so many years’ experience I have been thoroughly instructed concerning the world of spirits and its nature, as well as concerning the combat which those being regenerated must needs endure, in order to attain the happiness of eternal life.

그러나 아무도 이런 주제, 이런 이야기들을 듣고도 전혀 의심 없이 믿기에는 일반적인 설명으로는 도저히 쉽지 않기 때문에, 주님은 주님의 신적 자비(the Lord’s Divine mercy)를 아주 구체적으로 보이셨습니다. 그것은 이어지는 페이지들에서 다루겠습니다. But as no one can be so well instructed in such subjects by a general description as to believe them with an undoubting faith, the particulars of the Lord’s Divine mercy will be related in the following pages.

영적 인간의 자연적인 면들로 인해 영적 양식 말고도 역시 자연적인 양식들도 필요합니다. 다만 여기서 주님과 악한 영들의 차이가 있는데요, 악한 영들은 주님을 향한 사랑과 신앙, 그리고 선과 진리의 모든 것을 아주아주 극도로 증오, 사람에게 오직 ‘푸른 풀과 채소’ 밖에는 남아있지 못하게 합니다. 왜냐하면, 그 외의 것에는 영원한 생명이 들어있기 때문이지요. 그러나 주님은 다릅니다. 주님은 그건 기본이요, 그 외, ‘씨 맺는 채소’, ‘씨 가진 열매 맺는 모든 나무’도 함께 주십니다. 그로 하여금 이런 영적, 천적 양식을 통해 최종적으로 거듭남을 완성, 천국에 들어갈 수 있게 하시기 위해서입니다. 악한 영들의 세계의 그 참혹함과 증오를 조금이라도 알면, 모든 것을 희생해서라도 끝까지 거듭남을 완주, 꼭 천국에 들어가고야 말겠다 굳게 결심하시게 될 것입니다.
