※ AC.217, 창3:7, '이에 그들의 눈이 밝아져 자기들이 벗은 줄을 알고'(AC.211-217) - 말씀에 나오는 '포도나무, 무화과나무'의 속뜻

7절, 이에 그들의 눈이 밝아져 자기들이 벗은 줄을 알고 무화과나무 잎을 엮어 치마로 삼았더라 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves girdles.

말씀에서 ‘포도나무’(the vine)는 영적 선을, ‘무화과나무’는 자연적 선을 상징하기 위해 사용된 것임을 오늘날은 전혀 모르고 있습니다. 말씀의 속뜻(the internal sense of the Word)이 사라졌기 때문인데요, 그럼에도 이 표현들이 나오는 데들을 보면, 여전히 이런 의미를 상징하거나 포함하고 있지요. ‘포도원’(a vineyard)과 ‘무화과나무’와 관련, 주께서 비유들을 통해 하신 말씀들처럼 말입니다. 마태복음입니다. That the “vine” is used in the Word to signify spiritual good, and the “fig tree” natural good, is at this day utterly unknown, because the internal sense of the Word has been lost; nevertheless, wherever these expressions occur, they signify or involve this meaning; as also in what the Lord spoke in parables concerning a “vineyard” and a “fig tree”; as in Matthew:

길가에서 한 무화과나무를 보시고 그리로 가사 잎사귀 밖에 아무것도 찾지 못하시고 나무에게 이르시되 이제부터 영원토록 네가 열매를 맺지 못하리라 하시니 무화과나무가 곧 마른지라 (마21:19) Jesus seeing a fig tree in the way, came to it, but found nothing thereon save leaves only, and he said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward forever; and presently the fig tree withered away, (Matt. 21:19)

이 말씀이 의미하는 바는, 그 어떤 선도, 심지어 자연적 선조차도 땅 위에서는 찾을 수 없었다는 것입니다. 예레미야에 나오는 ‘포도나무’와 ‘무화과나무’ 역시 유사한 의미입니다. by which is meant, that no good, not even natural good, was to be found upon the earth. Similar is the meaning of the “vine” and “fig tree” in Jeremiah:

12그들이 가증한 일을 행할 때에 부끄러워하였느냐 아니라 조금도 부끄러워하지 않을 뿐 아니라 얼굴도 붉어지지 아니하였느니라 그러므로 그들이 엎드러질 자와 함께 엎드러질 것이라 내가 그들을 벌할 때에 그들이 거꾸러지리라 여호와의 말씀이니라 13여호와의 말씀이니라 내가 그들을 진멸하리니 포도나무에 포도가 없을 것이며 무화과나무에 무화과가 없을 것이며 그 잎사귀가 마를 것이라 내가 그들에게 준 것이 없어지리라 하셨나니 (렘8:12-13) Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? Nay, they were not at all ashamed, and they knew not how to blush; therefore I will surely gather them, saith Jehovah; there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf hath fallen, (Jer. 8:12–13)

이 말씀은 모든 선, 곧 영적, 자연적 선이 사라져 버렸다는 뜻입니다. 그들은 너무도 타락한 나머지 심지어 부끄러워하지도 않게 되었기 때문인데요, 마치 오늘날, 악 가운데 있어 자기들의 사악함에도 불구, 얼굴이 붉어지기는커녕 오히려 그걸 자랑하는 사람들처럼 말입니다. 호세아입니다. by which is signified that all good, both spiritual and natural, had perished, since they were so depraved as to have lost even the sense of shame, like those at the present day who are in evil, and who, so far from blushing for their wickedness, make it their boast. In Hosea:

옛적에 내가 이스라엘을 만나기를 광야에서 포도를 만남같이 하였으며 너희 조상들을 보기를 무화과나무에서 처음 맺힌 첫 열매를 봄같이 하였거늘 그들이 바알브올에 가서 부끄러운 우상에게 몸을 드림으로 저희가 사랑하는 우상 같이 가증하여졌도다 (호9:10) I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the first ripe in the fig tree in the beginning. (Hos. 9:10)

요엘입니다. And in Joel:

들짐승들아 두려워하지 말지어다 들의 풀이 싹이 나며 나무가 열매를 맺으며 무화과나무와 포도나무가 다 힘을 내는도다 (욜2:22) Be not afraid, ye beasts of my fields, for the tree shall bear its fruit, the fig tree and the vine shall yield their strength. (Joel 2:22)

여기 ‘포도나무’는 영적 선을, ‘무화과나무’는 자연적 선을 가리킵니다. The “vine” here denotes spiritual good, and the “fig tree” natural good.

※ 이 글에서는 아직 언급되지 않았지만, 말씀에 나오는 또 하나의 아주 중요한 나무, 곧 감람이라고 번역된 올리브나무가 있는데요, 이 나무가 바로 천적 선을 상징하는 나무입니다.

무화과나무 잎을 엮어 치마로 삼았더라 And they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves girdles.

‘잎을 엮어’(To sew leaves together)는 변명하는 것, ‘무화과나무’(the fig tree)는 자연적 선, ‘치마로 삼았더라’(to make themselves girdles)는 부끄러워했다는 것입니다. 태고인들은 이렇게 말했으며, 그 교회의 이 후손을 이렇게 묘사했습니다. 이 묘사는 그들이 전에 즐기던 이노센스 대신 이제는 자연적 선만, 곧 그 안에 그들의 악이 들어 있는 그런 선만 소유하게 되었음을, 그리고 그런 자연적 선 안에 있게 되었음을 부끄러워했다는 그런 묘사입니다. To “sew leaves together” is to excuse themselves; the “fig tree” is natural good; and to “make themselves girdles” is to be affected with shame. Thus spoke the most ancient people, and thus they described this posterity of the church, signifying that instead of the innocence they had formerly enjoyed, they possessed only natural good, by which their evil was concealed; and being in natural good, they were affected with shame.

사람의 오운(own)은 악과 거짓뿐이라는 걸 저는 그동안 다음과 같은 사실로 분명히 알게 되었는데요, 그것은 영들이 자기 자신으로부터 하는 말, 즉 주님으로 말미암지 않고, 영들 자신으로 말미암는 말은 항상 악과 거짓이라는 사실입니다. 이게 어느 정도냐면요, 그들의 말이 자기 자신으로부터 한 말임을 제가 알게 될 때마다, 저는 듣는 즉시 그 말은 거짓임을, 심지어 그들이 자기들이 한 말은 맞는 말임을 자기들은 정말 철저히 확신하고 있으니 전혀 의심할 필요가 없다고 말하는 중에도 저는 그 말이 거짓임을 알 수 있을 정도였습니다. 자기 생각으로 말하는 사람들의 경우도 같습니다. 같은 패턴인데요, 어떤 사람들이 영적, 천적 생명에 관한 것들, 즉 신앙과 관련된 것들에 관하여 이성질(to reason)을 시작했을 때마다, 저는 그들이 의심, 심지어 부인하고 있음을 지각할 수 있었습니다. 신앙에 관한 걸 이성질한다는 건 의심하고 부인하는 것이기 때문입니다. 그리고 이런 건 다 자아, 즉 그들의 오운으로 말미암는 것이어서, 그들은 그저 거짓들, 결과적으로는 짙은 어둠, 곧 거짓의 심연 속으로 가라앉는데요, 그들이 이 심연 가운데 있을 때는 아주 작은 것 하나로도 수 천의 진리들을 압도할 수가 있는 것이, 마치 눈동자 표면에 내려앉은 먼지 하나만으로도 온 우주와 그 안에 담긴 모든것에 관해 눈을 감게 하는 것과도 같습니다. That man’s own is nothing but evil and falsity has been made evident to me from the fact that whatever spirits have at any time said from themselves has been so evil and false that whenever it was made known to me that they spoke from themselves I at once knew that it was false, even though while speaking they were themselves so thoroughly persuaded of the truth of what they said as to have no doubt about it. The case is the same with men who speak from themselves. And in the same way, whenever any persons have begun to reason concerning the things of spiritual and celestial life, or those of faith, I could perceive that they doubted, and even denied, for to reason concerning faith is to doubt and deny. And as it is all from self or their own, they sink into mere falsities, consequently into an abyss of thick darkness, that is, of falsities, and when they are in this abyss the smallest objection prevails over a thousand truths, just as a minute particle of dust in contact with the pupil of the eye shuts out the universe and everything it contains.

※ 위 '이성질'이라는 표현은 '갑질' 같은 표현을 흉내, 주님 주신 귀한 이성을 소중하게 여기지 않고 대신 함부로 다루는 걸 빗대기 위해 제가 만든 표현입니다.

그런 사람에 관해 주님은 이사야에서 말씀하시기를  Of such persons the Lord says in Isaiah:

스스로 지혜롭다 하며 스스로 명철하다 하는 자들은 화 있을진저 (사5:21) Woe unto those who are wise in their own eyes, and intelligent before their own faces. (Isa. 5:21)

10네가 네 악을 의지하고 스스로 이르기를 나를 보는 자가 없다 하나니 네 지혜와 네 지식이 너를 유혹하였음이라 네 마음에 이르기를 나뿐이라 나 외에 다른 이가 없다 하였으므로 11재앙이 네게 임하리라 그러나 네가 그 근원을 알지 못할 것이며 손해가 네게 이르리라 그러나 이를 물리칠 능력이 없을 것이며 파멸이 홀연히 네게 임하리라 그러나 네가 알지 못할 것이니라 (사47:10-11) Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath turned thee away, and thou hast said in thine heart, I, and none else besides me; and evil shall come upon thee, thou shalt not know from whence it riseth, and mischief shall fall upon thee, which thou shalt not be able to expiate, and vastation shall come upon thee suddenly, of which thou art not aware. (Isa. 47:10–11)

예레미야에서는 In Jeremiah:

사람마다 어리석고 무식하도다 금장색마다 자기가 만든 신상으로 말미암아 수치를 당하나니 이는 그 부어 만든 우상은 거짓이요 그 속에 생기가 없음이라 (렘51:17) Every man is made stupid by knowledge [scientia], every founder is confounded by the graven image, for his molten image is falsehood, neither is there breath in them. (Jer. 51:17)

‘만든 신상’(A graven image)은 거짓이요, ‘부어 만든 우상’(a molten image)은 악, 곧 사람의 오운 속 악입니다. A “graven image” is the falsity, and a “molten image” the evil, of man’s own.
