337. 이번 장이 태고 교회의 퇴보, 또는 그 교리의 왜곡과, 그 결과 그 이단들과 종파들을 가인과 그 후손들의 이름들 아래 다루고 있는 까닭에, 참된 교회 본성에 대한 바른 이해 없이는 교리가 어떻게 왜곡되었는지, 그 교회의 이단들과 종파들의 본성이 무엇이었는지를 이해한다는 것은 전혀 불가능하다는 걸 분명히 관찰할 수 있습니다. As this chapter treats of the degeneration of the most ancient church, or the falsification of its doctrine, and consequently of its heresies and sects, under the names of Cain and his descendants, it is to be observed that there is no possibility of understanding how doctrine was falsified, or what was the nature of the heresies and sects of that church, unless the nature of the true church be rightly understood.

태고 교회는 천인(天人, a celestial man)이었으며, 주님 사랑, 이웃 사랑의 신앙 외 다른 신앙은 인정하지 않는 그런 교회였음은 위에서 충분히 말씀드렸습니다. Enough has been said above concerning the most ancient church, showing that it was a celestial man, and that it acknowledged no other faith than that which was of love to the Lord and toward the neighbor.

이 사랑으로 그들은 주님으로부터 오는 신앙, 혹은 신앙에 속한 모든 것을 지각하는 퍼셉션(perception, 知覺, 통찰력)을 가졌습니다. 그리고 이런 이유로, 그들은 신앙을 언급하는 것조차 내키지 않아 했는데요, 위에서 보여드린 것처럼, 신앙이 사랑으로부터 분리가 되면 안 되기 때문입니다. (200번, 203번 글 참조) Through this love they had faith from the Lord, or a perception of all the things that belonged to faith, and for this reason they were unwilling to mention faith, lest it should be separated from love, as was shown above. (n. 200, 203)

[2] 이런 사람이 바로 천인이며, 시편에서는 사람들의 대표자들로 그려지고 있습니다. 즉, 주님을 일컬어 왕이라, 천인을 일컬어 왕의 아들이라 하고 있지요. Such is the celestial man, and such he is described by representatives in David, where the Lord is spoken of as the king, and the celestial man as the king’s son:

1하나님이여 주의 판단력을 왕에게 주시고 주의 공의를 왕의 아들에게 주소서 Give the king thy judgments, and thy righteousness to the king’s son. 3의로 말미암아 산들이 백성에게 평강을 주며 작은 산들도 그리하리로다 The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the hills in righteousness. 5그들이 해가 있을 동안에도 주를 두려워하며 달이 있을 동안에도 대대로 그리하리로다 They shall fear thee with the sun, and toward the faces of the moon, generation of generations. 7그의 날에 의인이 흥왕하여 평강의 풍성함이 달이 다할 때까지 이르리로다 In his days shall the righteous flourish, and abundance of peace, until there be no moon. (시72:1, 3, 5, 7)

여기서 ‘해’는 사랑을 상징하며, ‘달’은 신앙을, ‘산들’과 ‘작은 산들’은 태고 교회를, ‘대대로’는 홍수 후에 일어난 교회들을 각각 상징합니다. ‘달이 다할 때까지’라고 한 것은 신앙이 사랑이 될 것이기 때문입니다. (이사야에서 말씀하시는 것도 보면,) By the “sun” is signified love; by the “moon,” faith; by “mountains” and “hills,” the most ancient church; by “generation of generations,” the churches after the flood; “until there be no moon” is said because faith shall be love. (See also what is said in Isaiah 30:26.)

여호와께서 자기 백성의 상처를 싸매시며 그들의 맞은 자리를 고치시는 날에는 달빛은 햇빛 같겠고 햇빛은 일곱 배가 되어 일곱 날의 빛과 같으리라 (사30:26)

[3] 이런 교회가 태고 교회였고, 이런 교회가 그들의 교리였습니다. Such was the most ancient church, and such was its doctrine.

그러나 이것은 지금하고는 많이 다릅니다. 지금은 신앙을 체어리티보다 우선시하기 때문입니다. 하지만 여전히 체어리티는 신앙을 통해서 주님이 주시는 것이며, 그래서 체어리티가 주(主)가 되는 것입니다. But the case is far different at this day, for now faith takes precedence over charity, but still through faith charity is given by the Lord, and then charity becomes the principal.

고대 교리 왜곡의 시작은, 그들이 자기들의 신앙고백과 함께 신앙을 사랑에서 분리해 냈을 때부터라는 것을 이런 사실, 곧 태고 교회의 본래 모습을 보고 아는 것입니다. It follows from this that in the most ancient time doctrine was falsified when they made confession of faith, and thus separated it from love.

이런 식으로 교리를 왜곡하거나, 사랑으로부터 신앙을 떼어내거나, 그냥 신앙만 고백하는 사람들을 이름하여 ‘가인’이라고 부른 것이며, 아주 극악무도한 범죄행위 같은 것으로 여겼습니다. Those who falsified doctrine in this way, or separated faith from love, or made confession of faith alone, were then called “Cain”; and such a thing was then regarded as an enormity.
