여기 ‘아담’(the man, 사람, [homo])은 태고교회인, 즉 천인(天人, the celestial man, 천적 인간)을, ‘아내’(the wife)와 ‘모든 산 자의 어머니’(the mother of all living)는 교회를 의미합니다. 그녀를 가리켜 ‘어머니’(mother)라 하는 이유는 첫 교회였기 때문이며, ‘산’(living)은 주님 신앙(faith in the Lord)을 소유한 결과인데, 주님은 생명 그 자체이신 분입니다. By the “man” [homo] is here meant the man of the most ancient church, or the celestial man, and by the “wife” and the “mother of all living” is meant the church. She is called “mother,” as being the first church; and “living,” in consequence of possessing faith in the Lord, who is life itself.

In the verses following, which conclude the chapter, we have a recapitulation of what occurred from the period when the man of the most ancient church was formed, until the flood; thus it is a conclusion to all that goes before.

‘그가 취함을 입은 흙으로 돌아감’(returning to the ground whence he was taken)이 교회가 거듭나기 전 상태였던 겉 사람으로 돌아가는 것(the church would return to the external man such as it was before regeneration)임이 분명한 것은 ‘흙’(ground)이 앞서 말씀드린 대로 겉 사람을 의미하기 때문입니다. 그리고 ‘흙’(dust)이 정죄를 받아 지옥과 같은 상태가 되는 걸 의미한다는 것 또한 뱀에 관해 말씀드린 걸로 분명한데요, 이 뱀은 저주를 받아 ‘흙을 먹을지니라’라는 말을 듣지요. ‘흙’(dust)의 상징에 대해 이런 예들 외에도, 시편에 나오는 다음과 같은 구절들도 있는데요, That by “returning to the ground whence he was taken” is signified that the church would return to the external man such as it was before regeneration, is evident from the fact that “ground” signifies the external man, as previously stated. And that “dust” signifies what is condemned and infernal is also evident from what was said of the serpent, which in consequence of being cursed is said to “eat dust.” In addition to what was there shown as to the signification of “dust,” we may add the following passages from David:

세상의 모든 풍성한 자가 먹고 경배할 것이요 진토 속으로 내려가는 자 곧 자기 영혼을 살리지 못할 자도 다 그 앞에 절하리로다 (시22:29) All those who go down to the dust shall bow before Jehovah, and those whose soul he hath not made alive. (Ps. 22:29)

주께서 낯을 숨기신즉 그들이 떨고 주께서 그들의 호흡을 거두신즉 그들은 죽어 먼지로 돌아가나이다 (시104:29) Thou hidest thy faces, they are troubled; thou takest away their breath, they expire, and return to their dust, (Ps. 104:29)

이 말씀은 사람들이 주님의 얼굴을 외면할 때 그들은 끝나거나 죽고, 그래서 ‘흙으로 돌아갈 것이니라’, 즉 정죄를 받고 지옥과 같은 상태가 된다는 뜻입니다. which means that when men turn away from the face of the Lord, they expire or die, and thus “return to the dust,” that is, are condemned and become infernal.
