그러나 겉 사람에 속한 감각적 경험으로만 모든 것을 판단하는 사람은 하나님이 사람이심을 이해하는 것이 불가능하다. 감각적 차원에 머무는 사람은 이 세상과 거기 속한 것에 의해서만 신성을 생각할 수 있을 뿐이고, 따라서 신성과 사람의 영성을 단지 육체적이고 물질적인 차원으로 여기기 때문이다. 그러므로 그는 만일 하나님이 사람이시라면 우주만큼 커야 하고, 하나님이 천상천하를 다스리신다면 세상 왕들이 하듯 많은 사람을 부려야 할 것이라고 결론짓는다. 만일 천국에 이 세상과 같은 공간이 없다는 말을 들으면, 그는 조금도 이해할 수 없을 것이다. 자연과 그 관점에서만 생각하는 사람은 눈에 보이는 넓이 개념 안에서만 생각하기 때문이다. 그러나 천국에서의 넓이는 이 세상의 면적과 다르다. 이 세상에서는 거리가 고정되어 있고, 측정할 수 있는 것이지만, 천국에서의 거리는 정해진 것이 아니고, 따라서 측정할 수 없다. 그러나 천국에서의 거리 개념은 후에 영계의 시간과 공간을 다룰 때 설명할 것이다. 또 사람의 시각이 아주 멀리까지 뻗어간다는 것, 즉 머나먼 태양과 별에까지 미친다는 것은 잘 알려진 사실이다. 깊이 생각해 보면, 사람의 내적 시각, 즉 사고의 시각은 더 멀리까지 확장되며, 따라서 더 내적인 시각은 더 멀리 간다는 것을 알 수 있을 것이다. 그렇다면, 모든 것 가운데 가장 내적이고 가장 높으신 신성은 그 시야가 어떠하겠는가! 생각은 이렇게 뻗어나가는 힘이 있기 때문에, 이미 말했듯이 천국의 모두는 서로 교통하며, 또 천국을 만들고 채우는 신성에 속한 모든 것도 서로 연결된다. But that God is man can scarcely be comprehended by those who judge all things from the sense conceptions of the external man, for the sensual man must needs think of the Divine from the world and what is therein, and thus of a Divine and spiritual man in the same way as of a corporeal and natural man. From this he concludes that if God were a man he would be as large as the universe; and if he ruled heaven and earth it would be done through many others, after the manner of kings in the world. If told that in heaven there is no extension of space as in the world, he would not in the least comprehend it. For he that thinks only from nature and its light must needs think in accord with such extension as appears before his eyes. But it is the greatest mistake to think in this way about heaven. Extension there is not like extension in the world. In the world extension is determinate, and thus measurable; but in heaven it is not determinate, and thus not measurable. But extension in heaven will be further treated of hereafter in connection with space and time in the spiritual world. Furthermore, everyone knows how far the sight of the eye extends, namely, to the sun and to the stars, which are so remote; and whoever thinks deeply knows that the internal sight, which is of thought, has a still wider extension, and that a yet more interior sight must extend more widely still. What then must be said of Divine sight, which is the inmost and highest of all? Because thoughts have such extension, all things of heaven are shared with everyone there, so, too, are all things of the Divine which makes heaven and fills it, as has been shown in the preceding chapters.

아브라함, 롯, 여호수아, 기드온, 마노아와 그의 아내 등에게 나타나신 신을 보면, 고대인들이 신을 사람으로 생각했음이 분명하다. 그들은 하나님을 한 사람으로 뵈었고, 그럼에도 그분을 하늘과 땅의 하나님 여호와라 부르며, 우주의 하나님으로 섬겼다. 아브라함에게 나타나신 분이 주님 자신이셨음을 요한복음 8장 56절의 주님 말씀으로 알 수 있다. 또 다른 이들에게 나타나신 분도 주님 자신이셨음을 다음 말씀으로 알 수 있다. That the men of old time had an idea of the Divine as human is evident from the manifestation of the Divine to Abraham, Lot, Joshua, Gideon, Manoah and his wife, and others. These saw God as a man, but nevertheless adored him as the God of the universe, calling him the God of heaven and earth, and Jehovah. That it was the Lord who was seen by Abraham he himself teaches in John 8:56; and that it was he who was seen by the rest is evident from his words:

너희 조상 아브라함은 나의 때 볼 것을 즐거워하다가 보고 기뻐하였느니라 (요8:56)

본래 하나님을 본 사람이 없으되 아버지 품 속에 있는 독생하신 하나님이 나타내셨느니라 (요1:18), 또한 나를 보내신 아버지께서 친히 나를 위하여 증언하셨느니라 너희는 아무 때에도 그 음성을 듣지 못하였고 그 형상을 보지 못하였으며 (요5:37) No one hath seen the Father, nor heard his voice, nor seen his form (John 1:18; 5:37).

그렇기 때문에 천국 개념, 즉 천국을 존재케 하는 신성에 대한 개념이 전혀 없는 사람은 천국의 첫 문턱을 넘지 못한다. 그런 사람이 거기 도착하는 순간, 강한 반발과 저항이 느껴진다. 천국을 받는 그릇이 되어야 할 그의 내면이 천국의 형상을 이루지 못하여 닫혀있기 때문이다. 그가 천국에 가까이 갈수록 내면은 더 굳게 닫혀진다. 이것이 기독교인 중 주님을 부인하거나 소시니아인들처럼 주님의 신성을 부인한 사람들의 종국이다. 그러나 성경을 몰라 주님을 알지 못한 비기독교인의 경우는 다르다. 그에 관해서는 후에 설명할 것이다. For this reason he that has no conception of heaven, that is, no conception of the Divine from which heaven is, cannot be raised up to the first threshold of heaven. As soon as such a one draws near to heaven a resistance and a strong repulsion are perceived; and for the reason that his interiors, which should be receptive of heaven, are closed up from their not being in the form of heaven, and the nearer he comes to heaven the more tightly are they closed up. Such is the lot of those within the church who deny the Lord, and of those who, like the Socinians, deny his Divinity. But the lot of those who are born out of the church, and who are ignorant of the Lord because they do not have the Word, will be described hereafter.

천국에서의 신 개념이 이렇기 때문에, 천국으로부터 조금이라도 입류를 받아들이는 사람이면 누구나 신을 사람의 모습으로 생각하는 능력이 심겨져 있다. 고대인들의 신 개념도 그랬고, 현대에도 교회 안팎을 불문하고 사람들이 이런 개념을 갖고 있다. 단순한 사람들은 신을 광채나는 노인으로 생각하기도 한다. 그러나 천국에서 오는 입류를 자기중심적 지성이나 악한 생활로 인해 멀리한 사람들은 이런 능력이 소멸돼 있다. 이 능력을 자기중심적 지성으로 말살한 사람은 보이지 않는 하나님을 원하고, 악한 생활로 말살한 사람은 아예 하나님을 원하지 않는다. 양쪽 다 그 심어진 능력이 작용을 안 하므로, 그 능력의 존재를 전혀 인식하지 못한다. 그러나 천국으로부터 사람 안으로 가장 기본적으로 흘러드는 것은, 천국의 신성 자체이다. 사람은 천국에 가도록 태어나기 때문이다. 신성에 대한 개념이 전혀 없이는 아무도 천국에 갈 수 없다. Because such a perception of the Divine exists in the heavens, to think of God as in a human form is implanted in every man who receives any influx from heaven. Thus did the ancients think of him; and thus do the moderns think of him both outside of the church and within it. The simple see him in thought as the Ancient One in shining light. But this insight has been extinguished in all those that by self-intelligence and by a life of evil have rejected influx from heaven. Those that have extinguished it by self-intelligence prefer an invisible God; while those that have extinguished it by a life of evil prefer no God. Neither of these are aware that such an insight exists, because they do not have it; and yet it is the Divine heavenly itself that primarily flows into man out of heaven, because man is born for heaven, and no one without a conception of a Divine can enter heaven.

주님의 신적 인성으로 인해 천국이 전체로나 부분으로나 사람 모습이기 때문에, 천사들은 그들이 주님 안에 있다고 하며, 또 주님의 사랑에서 나오는 선 안에 있다는 의미로 주님의 몸 안에 있다고 말한다. 이것을 주님은 다음과 같이 가르치셨다. Because heaven as a whole and in part, from the Lord’s Divine human, reflects a man, the angels say that they are in the Lord; and some say that they are in his body, meaning that they are in the good of his love. And this the Lord himself teaches, saying,

4내 안에 거하라 나도 너희 안에 거하리라 가지가 포도나무에 붙어 있지 아니하면 스스로 열매를 맺을 수 없음 같이 너희도 내 안에 있지 아니하면 그러하리라 5나는 포도나무요 너희는 가지라 그가 내 안에, 내가 그 안에 거하면 사람이 열매를 많이 맺나니 나를 떠나서는 너희가 아무 것도 할 수 없음이라 6사람이 내 안에 거하지 아니하면 가지처럼 밖에 버려져 마르나니 사람들이 그것을 모아다가 불에 던져 사르느니라 7너희가 내 안에 거하고 내 말이 너희 안에 거하면 무엇이든지 원하는 대로 구하라 그리하면 이루리라 8너희가 열매를 많이 맺으면 내 아버지께서 영광을 받으실 것이요 너희는 내 제자가 되리라 9아버지께서 나를 사랑하신 것 같이 나도 너희를 사랑하였으니 나의 사랑 안에 거하라 10내가 아버지의 계명을 지켜 그의 사랑 안에 거하는 것 같이 너희도 내 계명을 지키면 내 사랑 안에 거하리라 (요15:4-10) Abide in Me and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself except it abide in the vine, so neither can ye, except ye abide in Me. For apart from Me ye can do nothing. Abide in My love. If ye keep My commandments ye shall abide in My love (John 15:4–10).

천사들은 보이지 않는 신성(an invisible Divine)을 알지 못하고, 그런 신성 개념은 형체가 없다(a Divine devoid of form)고 말한다. 그들은 사람 형상으로 계시는 보이는 신만을 지각한다. 따라서 그들은 주님만이 참사람이시고, 자기들은 주님으로 인해 사람이라고 말하는 것이 습관이 되어 있다. 각 천사는 주님을 받아들이는 정도만큼(in the measure of his reception of the Lord) 사람이기 때문이다. 주님을 받아들인다는 것은 주님으로부터 오는 선과 진리를 받아들이는 것을 의미한다. 주님은 당신의 선과 진리 안에 계시기 때문이다. 이것을 그들은 지혜와 지성(wisdom and intelligence)라고 부른다. 사람은 지성과 지혜 때문에 사람이지, 그것을 떠난 생김새 때문이 아님을 모든 천사가 안다고 한다. 이것이 사실이라는 것은, 내적 천국의 천사들을 보면 분명히 알 수 있다. 그들은 주님으로부터 오는 선과 진리 안에 있기 때문에, 그 결과로 지혜와 지성이 있고, 또 가장 아름답고 완벽한 사람의 모습이다. 이에 비해 낮은 천국의 천사들은 덜 아름답고, 덜 완벽한 사람의 모습이다. 지옥의 경우는 완전히 반대이다. 지옥에 있는 영들은 천국의 빛으로 보면, 사람이라고 하기가 어렵고 마치 괴물 같다. 그들은 악과 거짓 안에 있고, 선과 진리가 없으며, 따라서 지혜와 지성의 반대편에 있기 때문이다. 그런 까닭에 그들의 삶은 삶이 아니라 영적 죽음이라 불린다. Because the angels have no perception of an invisible Divine, which they call a Divine devoid of form, but perceive only a visible Divine in human form, they are accustomed to say that the Lord alone is man, and that it is from him that they are men, and that each one is a man in the measure of his reception of the Lord. By receiving the Lord they understand receiving good and truth which are from him, since the Lord is in his good and in his truth, and this they call wisdom and intelligence. Everyone knows, they say, that intelligence and wisdom make man, and not a face without these. The truth of this is made evident from the appearance of the angels of the interior heavens, for these, being in good and truth from the Lord and in consequent wisdom and intelligence, are in a most beautiful and most perfect human form; while the angels of the lower heavens are in human form of less perfection and beauty. On the other hand, those who are in hell appear in the light of heaven hardly as men, but rather as monsters, since they are not in good and truth but in evil and falsity, and consequently in the opposites of wisdom and intelligence. For this reason their life is not called life, but spiritual death.

이것은 많은 체험을 통해 내게 입증되었다. 그 중 몇 가지를 말하겠다. 천국의 모든 천사들은 결코 신성을 사람 형상(a human form) 외의 다른 존재로 지각하지 않는다. 놀라운 것은, 가장 높은 천국의 천사들은 다른 식으로는 신성을 생각할 수도 없다. 그들이 이렇게 생각해야만 되는 것은, 그들에게 흘러드는 신성 자체에 기인하고, 또 그들의 생각이 천국의 형태를 따라 확장되기 때문이기도 하다. 천사의 생각은 천국 안에 뻗어나가며, 천사는 생각의 확장 정도에 따라 지성과 지혜를 갖는다. 그 결과 천국의 모든 사람은 주님을 확실히 알고 있다. 주님께만 신적 인성이 있기 때문이다. 이것은 단지 천사들에게 들었을 뿐만이 아니라, 내가 천국의 내적 영향권(the inner sphere of heaven) 안에 들어갈 때 직접 지각할 수 있었던 사실이다. That this is true has been proved to me by much experience, about which something shall now be said. No angel in the heavens ever perceives the Divine as being in any other than a human form; and what is remarkable, those in the higher heavens are unable to think of the Divine in any other way. The necessity of thinking in this way comes from the Divine itself that flows in, and also from the form of heaven in harmony with which their thoughts spread forth. For every thought of an angel spreads forth into heaven; and the angels have intelligence and wisdom in the measure of that extension. It is in consequence of this that all in heaven acknowledge the Lord, because only in him does the Divine human exist. Not only have I been told all this by angels, but when elevated into the inner sphere of heaven I have been able to perceive it.

이로써 천사가 지혜로울수록 이 사실을 더 명백히 지각한다는 것을 분명히 알 수 있다. 주님께서 그들에게 나타나시는 것도 이 사실에 기인한다. 주님은 보이는 신성(a visible Divine being)을 시인하고, 믿는 이들에게 사람 형상인 신적 천사의 모습(a Divine angelic form, which is the human form)으로 나타나시기 때문이다. 그러나 보이지 않는 신성을 믿는 이들에게는 나타나시지 않는다. 전자는 신성을 볼 능력이 있고, 후자는 없기 때문이다. From this it is evident that the wiser the angels are the more clearly they perceive this truth; and it is from this that the Lord is seen by them; for the Lord is seen in a Divine angelic form, which is the human form, by those who acknowledge and believe in a visible Divine being, but not by those who believe in an invisible Divine. For the former can see their Divine being, but the latter cannot.

천국이 전체와 부분에 있어 사람의 모습인 것이 주님의 신적 인성(the Lord’s Divine human)에 기인한다는 것은 지금까지의 내용에 따르는 결론이다. 지금까지의 내용을 요약하면, 다음과 같다. (1) 주님이 천국의 하나님이시다. (2) 주님의 신성이 천국을 이룬다. (3) 천국은 무수한 사회 공동체로 구성되고, 각 공동체는 작은 형태의 천국이며, 각 천사는 가장 작은 형태의 천국이다. (4) 천국 전체는 모두 합쳐 한 사람 모습이다. (5) 천국의 각 공동체도 한 사람 모습으로 되어 있다. (6) 따라서 각 천사도 완전한 사람의 모습이다. 이 모든 내용의 귀결로, 천국을 이루는 신성이 사람 모습이라는 결론이 성립된다. 이 신성이 주님의 신적 인성이라는 것은 ‘천국의 비밀’(Arcana Coelestia)에서 발췌한 관련 구절들인 이 장의 부록을 보면 더 확실히 알 수 있을 것이다. 그것을 보면, 주님의 인성이 신성이며, 교회에서 주님의 인성은 신성이 아니라고 믿는 것은 잘못된 것임을 알 수 있을 것이다. 또 ‘새 예루살렘과 그 천적 교리’(the New Jerusalem and Its Heavenly Doctrine)의 끝부분, 주님에 관한 장에도 같은 내용이 있다. That it is from the Lord’s Divine human that heaven as a whole and in part reflects man, follows as a conclusion from all that has been stated and shown in the preceding chapters, namely: (1) That the God of heaven is the Lord. (2) It is the Divine of the Lord that makes heaven. (3) Heaven consists of innumerable societies; and each society is a heaven in a smaller form, and each angel in the smallest form. (4) All heaven in the aggregate reflects a single man. (5) Each society in the heavens reflects a single man. (6) Therefore every angel is in a complete human form. All this leads to the conclusion that as it is the Divine that makes heaven, heaven must be human in form. That this Divine is the Lord’s Divine human can be seen still more clearly, because in a compendium, in what has been collected, brought together and collated from Arcana Coelestia and placed as a supplement at the end of this chapter. That the Lord’s human is Divine, and that it is not true that his human is not Divine, as those within the church believe, may also be seen in the same extracts, also in the chapter on the Lord, in the New Jerusalem and Its Heavenly Doctrine, at the end.

창1:27-30, 27하나님이 자기 형상 곧 하나님의 형상대로 사람을 창조하시되 남자와 여자를 창조하시고 And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28하나님이 그들에게 복을 주시며 하나님이 그들에게 이르시되 생육하고 번성하여 땅에 충만하라, 땅을 정복하라, 바다의 물고기와 하늘의 새와 땅에 움직이는 모든 생물을 다스리라 하시니라 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the heavens, and over every living thing that creepeth upon the earth. 29하나님이 이르시되 내가 온 지면의 씨 맺는 모든 채소와 씨 가진 열매 맺는 모든 나무를 너희에게 주노니 너희의 먹을거리가 되리라 And God said, Behold, I give you every herb bearing seed which is upon the faces of all the earth, and every tree in which is fruit; the tree yielding seed, to you it shall be for food. 30또 땅의 모든 짐승과 하늘의 모든 새와 생명이 있어 땅에 기는 모든 것에게는 내가 모든 푸른 풀을 먹을거리로 주노라 하시니 그대로 되니라 And to every wild animal of the earth, and to every fowl of the heavens, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth wherein is a living soul, every green herb for food; and it was so.

이 문제로 나와 대화한 선한 영들은 교회 안에 천국과 천사와 영에 대한 무지가 팽배한 것을 진심으로 애석해했다. 그리고 마음이 상해 나에게 자기들은 형체 없는 혼이 아니고, 연기 같은 기체도 아니며, 사람과 똑같은 모습이고, 이 세상에 있을 때와 다름없이 보고 듣고 느낀다는 것을 꼭 밝혀달라고 부탁했다.주71 Good spirits, with whom I have spoken about this matter, have been deeply grieved at such ignorance in the church about the condition of heaven and of spirits and angels; and in their displeasure they charged me to declare positively that they are not formless minds nor ethereal breaths, but are men in very form, and see, hear, and feel equally with those who are in this world.71

주71. 모든 개개의 천사는 주님으로 말미암는 신적 질서의 그릇인 만큼 사람 형태이고, 그의 받아들이는 만큼 완전하고 아름답다. Inasmuch as each angel is a recipient of Divine order from the Lord, he is in a human form, perfect and beautiful in the measure of his reception (n. 322, 1880, 1881, 3633, 3804, 4622, 4735, 4797, 4985, 5199, 5530, 6054, 9879, 10177, 10594). 질서가 존재하는 건 신적 진리에 의해서이며, 신적 선은 질서의 에센셜이다. It is by means of Divine truth that order exists; and Divine good is the essential of order (n. 2451, 3166, 4390, 4409, 5232, 7256, 10122, 10555).
