9절, 여호와 하나님이 그 땅에서 보기에 아름답고 먹기에 좋은 나무가 나게 하시니 동산 가운데에는 생명 나무와 선악을 알게 하는 나무도 있더라 And out of the ground made Jehovah God to grow every tree desirable to behold, and good for food; the tree of lives also, in the midst of the garden; and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

‘나무’(A tree)는 퍼셉션(perception)을 상징합니다. ‘보기에 아름다운 나무’(a tree desirable to behold)는 진리에 관한 퍼셉션(the perception of truth)을, ‘먹기에 좋은 나무’(a tree good for food)는 선에 관한 퍼셉션(the perception of good)을, ‘생명나무’(the tree of lives)는 사랑과 이 사랑에서 나오는 신앙(love and the faith thence derived)을, ‘선악을 알게 하는 나무’(the tree of the knowledge of good and evil)는 감각적인 것, 즉 단순한 기억-지식에서 나오는 신앙(faith derived from what is sensuous, that is, from mere memory-knowledge)을 상징합니다. A “tree” signifies perception; a “tree desirable to behold,” the perception of truth; a “tree good for food,” the perception of good; the “tree of lives,” love and the faith thence derived; the “tree of the knowledge of good and evil,” faith derived from what is sensuous, that is, from mere memory-knowledge.

※ 영어 'perception'(知覺)을 '지각'이라 번역하지 않고, 저는 그냥 발음 그대로 '퍼셉션'으로 적습니다. 이런 단어들이 여럿 나올 텐데요, 'affection'(애정), 'charity'(인애, 이웃사랑) 등이 그 예들입니다. 이들 단어들은 각각 '어펙션', '체어리티'로 적습니다. 그 이유는, 이들 단어들은 그 의미와 뉘앙스가 다양해 어느 한 단어로 픽스할 경우, 나머지 다른 의미와 뉘앙스들을 다 놓치는 것 같기 때문입니다.

주님이 ‘동쪽’(the east)이심은 말씀 에스겔에서도 볼 수 있습니다. That the Lord is the “east” also appears from the Word, as in Ezekiel:

1그 후에 그가 나를 데리고 문에 이르니 곧 동쪽을 향한 문이라 2이스라엘 하나님의 영광이 동쪽에서부터 오는데 하나님의 음성이 많은 물소리 같고 땅은 그 영광으로 말미암아 빛나니, 4여호와의 영광이 동문을 통하여 성전으로 들어가고 (겔43:1-2, 4) He brought me to the gate, even the gate that looketh the way of the east, and behold the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east; and his voice was as the voice of many waters, and the earth shone with his glory. (Ezek. 43:1–2, 4)

성전 건축 전, 표상교회인 유대교회(表象, the representative Jewish church)의 기도 관습, 곧 얼굴을 동쪽으로 향하던 거룩한 지배적 관습이 있었던 것은 바로 주님이 ‘동’(東, the east)이시기 때문이었습니다. It was in consequence of the Lord’s being the “east” that a holy custom prevailed in the representative Jewish church, before the building of the temple, of turning their faces toward the east when they prayed.

‘동산’(a garden)은 지성(intelligence)을, ‘에덴’(Eden)은 사랑을 상징한다는 사실은 이사야에도 나옵니다. That a “garden” signifies intelligence, and “Eden” love, appears also from Isaiah:

나 여호와가 시온의 모든 황폐한 곳들을 위로하여 그 사막을 에덴 같게, 그 광야를 여호와의 동산 같게 하였나니 그 가운데에 기뻐함과 즐거워함과 감사함과 창화하는 소리가 있으리라 (사51:3) Jehovah will comfort Zion, he will comfort all her waste places, and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of Jehovah; joy and gladness shall be found therein, confession and the voice of singing. (Isa. 51:3)

이 구절에서 ‘사막’(wilderness), ‘기뻐함’(joy) 및 ‘감사함’(confession)은 신앙의 천적인 것들, 즉 사랑 관련된 것들에 대한 표현이지만, ‘광야’(desert), ‘즐거워함’(gladness) 및 ‘창화하는 소리’(唱和, the voice of singing)는 신앙의 영적인 것들, 즉 이해에 속한 것들에 대한 표현입니다. 전자는 ‘에덴’에, 후자는 ‘동산’과 관계가 있는데요, 이 선지자의 경우, 동일한 것에 관한 두 가지 표현, 즉 하나는 천적인 것, 다른 하나는 영적인 것에 대한 표현이 늘 따르기 때문입니다. ‘에덴동산’(the garden in Eden)의 더욱 깊은 의미는 10절의 이어지는 내용을 보시면 됩니다. In this passage, “wilderness,” “joy,” and “confession” are terms expressive of the celestial things of faith, or such as relate to love; but “desert,” “gladness,” and “the voice of singing,” of the spiritual things of faith, or such as belong to the understanding. The former have relation to “Eden,” the latter to “garden”; for with this prophet two expressions constantly occur concerning the same thing, one of which signifies celestial, and the other spiritual things. What is further signified by the “garden in Eden,” may be seen in what follows at verse 10.
