이어지는 글 가운데서 ‘주님’(the Lord)이라는 이름은 세상의 구주이신 예수 그리스도, 오직 그분만 의미합니다. 그분은 앞뒤 무슨 다른 이름을 덧붙이는 거 없이 오직 ‘주님’으로만 일컬음을 받으십니다. 온 천국에 걸쳐 그분은 주님으로 인식되시며, 사랑과 공경을 받으십니다. 모든 천국과 지상에서 오직 그분만이 모든 권세를 가진 분이시기 때문이지요. 그분은 제자들에게 친히 자신을 그렇게 부르라 명하셨습니다. In the following work, by the name Lord is meant the savior of the world, Jesus Christ, and him only; and he is called “the Lord” without the addition of other names. Throughout the universal heaven he it is who is acknowledged and adored as Lord, because he has all sovereign power in the heavens and on earth. He also commanded his disciples so to call him, saying,

너희가 나를 주라 하니 너희 말이 옳도다 내가 그러하다 (요13:13) Ye call me Lord, and ye say well, for I am. (John 13:13)

그래서 그분의 부활 후, 제자들은 그분을 오직 ‘주님’으로만 불렀습니다. And after his resurrection his disciples called him “the Lord.”

거듭나는 중인 사람들이 모두 이 상태에 도달하는 것은 아닙니다. 오늘날 사람들의 대부분은 첫 번째 상태까지만입니다. 그중 일부만 두 번째, 그 밖의 사람들이 세 번째, 네 번째나 다섯 번째, 그리고 아주 적은 수가 여섯 번째에 이르고, 일곱 번째 상태에 도달하는 사람은 거의 없습니다. Those who are being regenerated do not all arrive at this state. The greatest part, at this day, attain only the first state; some only the second; others the third, fourth, or fifth; few th sixth; and scarcely anyone the seventh.

여섯 번째 상태는 사람이 믿음으로, 그리고 그로 말미암아 사랑으로 참된 것을 말하고, 선한 일을 행하는 때입니다. 그때 사람한테서 나오는 것들을 일컬어 ‘생물’(living soul)과 ‘가축’(beast)이라고 합니다. 그리고 그때 사람은 신앙과 사랑 둘 다를 가지고 바로 행동을 시작하기 때문에, 영적인 사람(spiritual man)이 되며, 이런 그를 일컬어 ‘형상’(image)이라고 합니다. 그의 영적인 삶(생활, 생명)은 신앙에 속한 지식들과 체어리티에 속한 행위들로 말미암아 기쁜 삶이 되며, 또 유지됩니다. 이런 지식들과 행위들을 일컬어 그의 ‘먹을거리’(food)라고 합니다. 반면, 그의 자연적 삶은 몸과 몸의 감각에 속한 것들로 말미암아 기쁜 삶이 되고 유지되는데, 바로 이 지점이 영적 전투가 벌어지는 곳입니다. 그의 안에서 사랑이 주(主, the dominion)가 되며, 그가 천적인 사람(天的, celestial man)이 될 때까지 말이지요. The sixth state is when, from faith, and thence from love, he speaks what is true, and does what is good: the things which he then brings forth are called the “living soul” and the “beast.” And as he then begins to act at once and together from both faith and love, he becomes a spiritual man, who is called an “image.” His spiritual life is delighted and sustained by such things as belong to the knowledges of faith, and to works of charity, which are called his “food”; and his natural life is delighted and sustained by those which belong to the body and the senses; whence a combat arises, until love gains the dominion, and he becomes a celestial man.
