에녹은 육십오 세에 므두셀라를 낳았고 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah. (창5:21)

516. 전에 말씀드린 대로, ‘에녹’은 일곱 번째 교회를, ‘므두셀라’는 여덟 번째 교회를 각각 상징합니다. By “Enoch,” as before said, is signified a seventh church; and by “Methuselah” an eighth.

517. ‘에녹’이라는 교회의 퀄러티는 이어지는 절들에서 설명합니다. The quality of the church “Enoch” is described in the following verses.

19에녹을 낳은 후 팔백 년을 지내며 자녀들을 낳았으며 And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters. 20그는 구백육십이 세를 살고 죽었더라 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years; and he died. (창5:19-20)

515. 이들 표현들의 상징들 또한 위 같은 표현들의 것들과 유사합니다. The signification of these words also is similar to that of the like words above.

야렛이 구백육십이 세를 살았다, 므두셀라는 구백육십구 세를 살았다 하여 대홍수 이전 사람들의 나이가 실제로 이렇게 엄청났었던 것은 아닙니다. 이 사실을, 특별히 주님의 신적 자비, 곧 주님의 허락하심으로 다음 장 3절, ‘그들의 날은 백이십 년이 되리라’(창6:3)를 통해 모두가 아시게 됩니다. 거듭 말씀드리지만, 이 햇수들은 어떤 개인의 수명을 가리키는 게 아니라 해당 교회의 때와 상태들을 상징하는 것입니다. That the ages of the antediluvians were not so great, as that of Jared nine hundred and sixty-two years, and that of Methuselah nine hundred and sixty-nine years, must appear to everyone, especially from what of the Lord’s Divine mercy will be said at verse 3 of the next chapter, where we read, “Their days shall be a hundred and twenty years”; so that the number of the years does not signify the age of any particular man, but the times and states of the church.

513. ‘야렛’은 앞서 말씀드린 대로, 여섯 번째 교회를, ‘에녹’은 일곱 번째 교회를 각각 상징합니다. By “Jared,” as before said, is signified a sixth church; by “Enoch” a seventh.

514. ‘야렛’이라는 교회에 관해서는 아무것도 알려진 게 없습니다. 그러나 그 교회가 대략 어떠했으리라는 것은 그 앞 교회였던 ‘마할랄렐’과, 그 다음 교회인 ‘에녹’을 보면 알 수 있습니다. 이 교회는 그 둘 사이에 있었기 때문입니다. Concerning the church called “Jared” nothing is related; but its character may be known from the church “Mahalalel” which preceded it, and the church “Enoch” which followed it, between which two it was intermediate.
