가인을 위하여는 벌이 칠 배일진대 라멕을 위하여는 벌이 칠십칠 배이리로다 하였더라 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold. (창4:24)

432. 이 말씀은, 신앙적 폭행에 관한 신성한 금지가 있었음에도, 그들은 ‘가인’으로 불리는 (분리된) 신앙을 끝장냈고, 동시에 (가인의) 신앙을 통해 나오게 되어 있었던 체어리티 또한 끝장냈음을, 이 경우는 더욱 심각한 신성모독인데, 그래서 이런 이유로, 이 말씀은 지옥, 곧, ‘칠십칠 배의 벌’로 표현된 지옥과도 같은 결과를 맞게 되었음을 의미합니다. These words signify that they had extinguished the faith meant by “Cain,” to do violence to which was sacrilege, and at the same time had extinguished the charity which should be born through faith, a far greater sacrilege, and that for this there was condemnation, that is, a “seventy and sevenfold avengement.”

433. 가인의 경우, ‘벌이 칠 배’라는 것은, 이미 15절에서 보여드린 대로, ‘가인’으로 상징되는 분리된 신앙에 폭력을 행사하는 것은 신성모독이었음을 상징합니다. That Cain’s being “avenged sevenfold” signifies that it was sacrilege to do violence to that separated faith which is meant by “Cain,” has been already shown at verse 15.

‘칠십칠 배의 벌’은 아주 끔찍한 신성모독을 상징하며, 그 결과는 지옥입니다. 이것은 ‘칠십칠’(77)이 상징하는 바를 보면 분명합니다. And that by a “seventy and sevenfold avengement” is signified a far greater sacrilege, the consequence of which is damnation, is evident from the signification of “seventy and sevenfold.”

‘칠’(7)이라는 숫자는 거룩하다는 것은 다음과 같은 사실에서 유래하는데요, ‘일곱째 날’은 천적 인간, 천적 교회, 천적 나라, 그리고 가장 높은 뜻으로 바로 주님 자신을 상징한다는 사실입니다. That the number “seven” is holy originates in the fact that the “seventh day” signifies the celestial man, the celestial church, the celestial kingdom, and, in the highest sense, the Lord himself.

그래서 ‘칠’이라는 숫자는 말씀 가운데 나올 때마다 거룩한 것, 혹은 가장 신성한 것을 상징합니다. 그리고 이 거룩함과 신성함은 그 본문에서 다루어지고 있는 것들로 서술되거나, 따릅니다. Hence the number “seven,” wherever it occurs in the Word, signifies what is holy, or most sacred; and this holiness and sanctity is predicated of, or according to, the things that are being treated of.

숫자 ‘칠십’(70)의 상징은 여기에서 오는데요, 일곱 때(age)로 구성됩니다. 말씀에서, 한 때는 십 년입니다. From this comes the signification of the number “seventy,” which comprises seven ages; for an age, in the Word, is ten years.

정말 거룩하거나 신성한 것을 표현해야 할 때, ‘칠십 배’라고 했습니다. 주님은 말씀하시기를, 사람은 그의 형제를 일곱 번뿐 아니라, 일흔 번씩 일곱 번이라도 용서하라 하셨는데, 이 말씀의 의미는, 그가 죄를 얼마나 짓든지 끝없이, 혹은 영원히 용서하라는 말씀입니다. 이것이 거룩입니다. When anything most holy or sacred was to be expressed, it was said “seventy-sevenfold,” as when the Lord said that a man should forgive his brother not until seven times, but until seventy times seven (Matt. 18:22), by which is meant that they should forgive as many times as he sins, so that the forgiving should be without end, or should be eternal, which is holy.

예수께서 이르시되 네게 이르노니 일곱 번뿐 아니라 일곱 번을 일흔 번까지라도 할지니라 (마18:22)

그리고 여기, 라멕의 말, ‘벌이 칠십칠 배이리로다’의 의미는 지옥입니다. 가장 신성한 것을 더럽혔기 때문입니다. And here, that Lamech should “be avenged seventy and sevenfold” means damnation, because of the violation of that which is most sacred.
